The Carolina Hurricanes tried hard to halt the Tampa Bay Lightning’s winning streak, but couldn’t quite get it done, as Lightning forward Alex Killorn roofed a shot over Canes starting goalie Eddie Lack with 48 seconds left in overtime to make it nine straight for the Bolts.
Forward Jeff Skinner had a goal and an assist, while forwards Victor Rask and Phil Di Gisueppe each had two assists for the Canes (29-26-11) against the Lightning (39-22-4).
Both teams had some good chances in the first period, but with 3:17 left in the period it was the Lightning who capitalized first, as forward Ondrej Palat danced his way through the Canes’ defenders and fired a shot past Lack for a 1-0 lead that Tampa Bay would take into the intermission.
Skinner helped the Canes cash in just a few minutes after being robbed by Lightning starter Ben Bishop, as he set up Di Gisueppe, who executed a perfect drop pass to Rask in the slot, and his shot deflected in off Bishop.
The tie was short-lived, as Palat snapped his second of the night past Lack from the left faceoff circle for a 2-1 Lightning lead with 4:17 left in the period, and once again the Canes found themselves trailing by one heading to the locker room.
The Canes wasted little time tying things up early in the third, as with the team on an early power play, forward Elias Lindholm’s shot from the left circle deflected off the leg of Jordan Staal, off Bishop’s pad, off a defender and in the net to tie the game at two.
The Canes were put in a tough spot about six minutes in, as forward Riley Nash took a double-minor high-sticking penalty in the offensive zone. The Canes’ eighth-ranked penalty kill was able to get the job done though, aided by an impressive glove save by Lack on Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov.
Just moments after the kill, the Canes grabbed their first lead of the game, as Skinner tapped in a cross-crease feed from Di Gisueppe for a 3-2 lead with 9:42 left.
Tampa tied things back up about four minutes later, as forward Tyler Johnson was left all alone in front of Lack, and took a pass from the corner and tapped it in to deadlock things at three with 5:47 remaining.
The Canes penalty kill faced another tall task when defenseman Ron Hainsey was called for holding with about three and a half minutes left, but it was again equal to it. The last few minutes of regulation were all Lightning, but Lack and the Canes’ defenders managed to keep things knotted at three as the game headed to overtime.
3-on-3 overtime was its usual back-and-forth madness, with each team getting several grade-A chances before Killorn notched the winner.
The Canes return home to take on the Ottawa Senators at PNC Arena on Tuesday night.
