Former UT-Martin head coach Heath Schroyer has been named assistant head coach for the NC State men’s basketball team, according to a press release sent out by NC State Athletics.
Schroyer spent the past two seasons with the Skyhawks, compiling a record of 41-28, including a first-place finish in the Ohio Valley West Conference last year. They narrowly missed on an NCAA Tournament berth after coming up short the conference title game in double overtime.
“I’m excited to have Heath join our staff. He has done an outstanding job at UT-Martin, and has had success as both a head coach and as an assistant,” Gottfried said in the press release. “Heath’s programs have traditionally shown great improvement, he is a strong on-floor and in-game coach, and is a proven recruiter at the highest level.”
After taking over a team that only had eight wins, Schroyer led the squad to 21 wins in the following season. In result of this, he was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Associated Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year in 2014-15.
Prior to his head coaching gig at UT-Martin, Schroyer spent three years as an assistant at UNLV, in which he helped attain the No. 7 recruiting class in the nation in 2012. In his years at UNLV, he was twice named among the top-15 assistants in the nation.
His first head-coaching spot came at Portland State in 2002, where he led the team to a 14-game improvement over three years, helping the school to its first league title in any male sport in 2004-05.
Gottfried also announced that he promoted Orlando Early and Butch Pierre to assistant head coaching roles. These promotions and the addition of Schroyer have rounded out Gottfried’s coaching staff.
