The NC State women’s golf team traveled to Rio Grande this past weekend to participate in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, finishing 10th place out of 16.
The tournament marked the first competition for the team in almost four months, but the Wolfpack showed no signs of rust and impressed early.
The Pack came out firing, and finished the first of three rounds in a tie for fourth place, led by senior Rachael Taylor’s score of 67 (-5). Her performance was enough to end the day in second place behind only Texas Tech’s Gabby Barker.
In just her third college tournament, freshman Laura Kowohl shot even par that placed her in a tie for 12th on the leaderboard.
This impressive day one performance from the Wolfpack could not be reciprocated on day two, as the team fell from fourth to eighth in the standings.
Freshman Leonie Bettel led the team with a score of 72 (E), but ended the tournament with the lowest on the team by four strokes.
Day three did not see an improvement, as no one broke a score of 76 (+4). NC State ended the tournament in 10th place out of 16 schools.
Despite the position the Wolfpack put itself in at the end of day one, the golfers seemed to struggle as the tournament went on. This may have had something to do with the four-month intermission, as it’s been awhile since they have seen competitive action.
The team will travel to Florida for the Lady Gator Invitational, which is scheduled to take place March 5-6.
