Behind double-doubles from Miah Spencer and Jennifer Mathurin and a 17-point comeback, the NC State women’s basketball beat UNC-Chapel Hill for the second time this season, 80-66, Sunday in Carmichael Arena.
The win marked the first time the Wolfpack (18-9, 9-5 ACC) swept the Tar Heels (14-15, 4-10 ACC) since the 1999-2000 season, after it first beat the Heels 78-49 Jan. 31 at home. NC State shot 44 percent from the field while UNC shot at just 32 percent. Additionally, the Pack out-rebounded the Tar Heels 44-34.
The Wolfpack fell into a quick 8-0 hole, and UNC expanded its lead to 24-13 at the end of the first quarter. The Heels went on to earn a 33-16 lead with 7:59 left in the first half, their largest of the game. However, they lost all of their momentum as NC State went on a 23-3 run to end the half with a 39-36 lead.
The Pack kept its momentum going to start the second half, ripping off a 16-2 run in the first 4:36 to expand the lead 55-39. North Carolina fought back from there as it went on a 14-9 run to cut the lead to 64-55.
However, NC State’s lead never got lower than eight as it closed out the game with relative ease.
Junior guard Spencer led the Wolfpack with 25 points and 10 assists, which tied a career high, and added five rebounds. Redshirt junior guard Dominique Wilson followed right behind with 19 points, including 7-of-9 shooting from inside the arc. Junior forward Mathurin added 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
For the Tar Heels, freshman Stephanie Watts led all scorers with 30 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore Jamie Cherry and freshman Destinee Walker added 13 points each. However, while each team had three players score in double digits, no other player scored more than six.
The Pack faces No. 10 Florida State Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Holliday Gymnasium at Broughton High School for senior night.
