A student riding on a bicycle collided with a Wolfline transit bus on the road at approximately 3:05 p.m. on Tuesday outside Robertson Hall.
A fire marshal pickup truck arrived quickly at the scene, and an ambulance arrived shortly after. The student sustained minor abrasions and was treated on the scene by EMS, where she was released as well. The cyclist was wearing a helmet and backpack at the time of the collision.
A traffic delay was caused by police investigating the accident at the scene and buses were rerouted for up to an hour as a result until police were finished, according to Major David Kelly of the NC State University Police Department.
“Thankfully, the student was relatively okay,” said Stanley March at the safety department of NC State Wolfline. “It looks like she didn’t see the bus, came out between two cars parked on Western Boulevard and scraped the side of the bus, which made her fall. It’s a good thing that the driver was able to contact emergency services right away.”
The accident occurred on the narrow road in front of Robertson Hall on Western Boulevard at a short distance from the intersection of Western Boulevard and Dan Allen Drive. The bus was assigned to a Wolflink Shuttle route and had left the Carmichael Gym stop a few minutes prior to the event.
After the accident, the transit driver opened the bus doors and students rushed over to the hurt cyclist who laid next to her bike near parked cars. Students helped the cyclist up and she sat down on the sidewalk.
After students got off, the transit driver sent out a radio call for an EMT to come to the site as soon as possible.
“I was riding the bus and I didn’t really see what happened, but I heard a noise, like someone scream,” said Will Kelsey, a senior studying computer science who was among the students riding the bus at the time of the accident. “The bus stopped, and students yelled for people to call 911.”
Sharna Chowdhury, a graduate student studying landscape architecture who was also on the bus, retold what she saw moments after the Wolfline accident.
“I was on the bus, and suddenly, the people inside the bus began shouting, because I think they saw the girl [on the bike] hitting the bus, and the driver stopped the bus immediately,” Chowdhury said. “After that, the students on the bus went to go find the girl.”
