Coming off a victory against Pepperdine, the NC State women’s soccer team will take on Santa Clara in Palo Alto, California in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Wolfpack will make its first appearance in the third round of the tournament since 1995 as the team continues its improbable postseason run.
Santa Clara (11-6-4, 6-2-1 WCC) pulled off a massive upset of No.1 Stanford, who had previously lost only one match the entire season, in the second round to advance to the third round of the tournament.
In what has been a complete turnaround for State, the squad has compiled a 11-8-2 record overall and went 4-5-1 in conference play. After going winless in ACC play the previous two years, this season represents a significant improvement for the program.
The turnaround has been led by a stout group of underclassmen, including sophomore midfielder Taylor Porter, who scored the game-winning goal against Pepperdine and has contributed two goals while playing in all 21 games this season.
The Wolfpack defense has also contributed to NC State’s run in the tournament, as the unit has not allowed a goal in the tournament up to this point. Sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Wootten has made several crucial saves in the tourney, including two against Minnesota in the first round in penalty kicks.
Santa Clara will depend on senior forward Jordan Jesolva, who leads the team with nine goals and 22 points in total.
The match is set to kick off at 4 p.m. eastern time, with the winner playing either Georgetown or Virginia in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
