A Red Bull-sponsored event called “Game Breakers” will come to NC State on Thursday. The event is a flag football tournament that will feature eight different teams from NC State’s intramural leagues.
The tournament is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday over at the Pullen Park softball fields. Red Bull could not reserve any spot on campus to host the event because of prior reservations by NC State intramurals. Admission is free and highly encouraged for all NC State students.
While the tournament is going on, a Red Bull truck with a DJ will be playing music while handing out free Red Bull. Publix will also be supplying subs to the event.
The idea for this type of tournament was originally designed for high schools. Former NFL players teamed up with Red Bull to construct a competition for the best high school travel flag football teams in the nation. The ensuing event was deemed “Game Breakers.”
The competition utilizes only half the length of a traditional football field and was designed to feature quick plays. The seven-versus-seven event awards points for each “game-breaking moment,” which includes first downs, touchdowns, PAT’s, interceptions, defensive stops and red zone stops.
Since being first conceived a couple years ago, the tournament has evolved for college campuses, with NC State being one of the first in the nation to host such an event.
The eight-team tourney will feature a double-elimination style of play. The teams competing were partially hand-picked so as to exhibit the best that NC State has to offer. Messages encouraging teams to join were also posted on the IMLeagues website.
The winning team will be displayed on a large poster that includes the full tournament bracket and will be posted inside the NC State rec center. Once the event is over, there are talks of an after party at a local restaurant or bar to celebrate.
