The city of Raleigh is currently constructing a new transportation hub downtown which will be completed and operational in January 2018, according to The News & Observer.
Union Station, as the city has named it, will accommodate both rail and bus transportation terminals and cost $90 million, according to the News & Observer.
Before the project is completed though, city leaders have a lot of details to finalize, such as appropriation of space and advertising concerns. Much of the building will be dedicated to office space for rent.
Raleigh City Councilman Corey Branch said he likes the clean look of RDU International Airport, according to The News & Observer.
“The last thing I would want … is [to] walk in and see all these ads and boards,” Branch said.
Raleigh staff updated the council Tuesday on the construction of Union Station, which is being built on Martin Street with the help of the city. It will feature buses and trains.
Construction is between 35 and 40 percent complete, said Rich Kelly, engineering services director.
Raleigh has already paid about $10 million more than expected for the project, according to The News & Observer. Last year, the council increased its budget to $54.7 million from roughly $44 million to factor in the rising cost of construction materials like concrete and steel. The rest of the project is being financed by federal and state funds.
