The Carolina Hurricanes were 1:06 away from earning a point for the third straight game when the penalty kill, which had already killed off four penalties on the night, could not quite finish it off.
Bo Horvat, scored two goals to lead the way for the Canucks (16-16-9) in a 3-2 win over former Canuck goaltender Eddie Lack and the Hurricanes (16-18-7).
The Canes, who are first in shots against per game this year, were not their typical stingy selves, as they really struggled to limit Vancouver’s speed through the neutral zone, particularly in the first period when they were outshot 8-2
However, Lack came up big in the opening frame in his Vancouver return, stopping three breakaways in the period, all from Horvat, and the Canes managed to escape unscathed.
The Canes settled in a little bit in the second, and while they still struggled with their puck management, they managed to get some offensive opportunities of their own going in the period, outshooting the Canucks 13-7.
The Hurricanes dented the scoreboard first in the period, getting their first shorthanded goal of the season as forward Jordan Staal skated the puck in on the penalty kill and executed a perfect drop pass to defenseman John-Michael Liles who blasted it past Canucks goalie Jacob Markstrom for a 1-0 Hurricanes lead.
The Canes poor defensive play came back to haunt them later in the period, though, as a turnover in the offensive zone led to a breakaway for Vancouver forward Sven Baertschi that tied the game at one late in the period.
The Canucks had a chance to take the lead early in the third, as they started the period on a 5-on-3 power play due to an Elias Lindholm penalty for clearing the puck over the glass late in the second, but the penalty kill came up big.
The Canucks still managed to go up 2-1 about seven minutes into the period, however, as Horvat carved his way through the Canes defense and put the puck past Lack.
Jordan Staal tied things up about five minutes later after a faceoff win as Canes defensemen Noah Hanifin set him up in the slot, where he fired a wrister past Markstrom.
Carolina defenseman Jaccob Slavin cleared the puck over the glass late in the period to set up Horvat’s power-play winner.
With the loss, the Canes finished their two-game Western Canadian road trip 0-1-1. They will return to PNC Arena Friday to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets.
