All things considered, Cam Ward played a pretty solid game for the Carolina Hurricanes at Rexall Place in Edmonton tonight, stopping 26 of 27 Oilers shots in a 1-0 overtime loss. Unfortunately for him and the Hurricanes (16-17-7), his one blunder was a costly one.
About three minutes into sudden death overtime, former Hurricanes defenseman Andrej Sekera skated into the slot and fired a shot that appeared to be an easy glove save for Ward, but the puck bounced off his glove and right to Sekera, who deposited the rebound past him to give the Oilers (17-21-3) the win.
Oilers netminder Cam Talbot was excellent, stopping 29 shots the Hurricanes sent his way to grab a shutout and win for the home team.
Carolina certainly had their chances against Talbot, the closest being a Jordan Staal snap wrister early in the first period that beat the 28-year old netminder but clanged off the post. They had another chance to dent the scoreboard when some good zone time and pressure in the second period led to a flurry of chances for the top line of Eric Staal, Elias Lindholm, and Kris Versteeg, but some key blocks by the Oilers defenders and good saves by Talbot kept the puck out of the net.
The Canes got one final chance to end it in regulation when they got their only power play of the game, as Oilers forward Brad Hunt was whistled for hooking, but despite some good pressure leading to a few more quality chances, Talbot and Edmonton’s penalty killers were up to the task.
There was a scary moment for Carolina with under a minute to play as an Eric Staal clearing pass from behind the net was picked off by the Oilers, but Ward was ready and made a sharp save on Teddy Purcell’s snap wrister from the slot, and the Canes were able to secure one point in the standings.
Despite the loss, the Canes penalty kill was perfect tonight, killing a high-sticking penalty to Brock McGinn in the second period and hooking to Versteeg in the third.
The Canes will next head to Vancouver to take on the Canucks Wednesday night.
