Most people know Zooey Deschanel, who plays Jess on “New Girl” and Summer in “500 Days of Summer,” as being the queen of quirkiness. Between her swing dresses and signature, mile-long bangs, she pretty much deserves to be her own adjective. “Is this outfit OK?” “Yes, it’s so ZD.” You see? She’s an important figure. However, come halfway through the current season of “New Girl,” Deschanel will be replaced by … Megan Fox. Yes, it’s true. No, I wouldn’t lie to you about something so serious. The show that was built around the quirkiness of one woman in a loft full of men will be replaced by a robot-fighting, sex symbol like Fox. How does that add up?
Apparently, Jess’ character is taken away from the loft due to jury duty (while Deschanel is on maternity leave) so she sublets her spot in the loft to Fox’s character, Reagan. That’s all well and good, but Fox is not exactly the first actress people think of when they think of comedies. Even if you think she is the funniest actress in all of the galaxy, how could she “replace” the kind of humor that Deschanel brings to the show? This is the kind of stuff that keeps me up at night.
The other members of the show put some of my worries at ease. According to the executive producer and creator of the show, Liz Meriwether, Fox is hilarious. “It’s insane to me that such a gorgeous person can be so funny, but I guess we just all have to accept it,” Meriwether said. Cast members, like Max Greenfield, displayed their excitement with tweets about having Fox on the show. Even Deschanel gave her stamp of approval with her tweet: “The lovely and amazing @meganfox will be on #NewGirl season 5!” If that isn’t love in the 21st century, then I don’t know what is.
The show has thrown us a curveball. Even with all the changes, fans can’t be angry. Deschanel just wants some time with her new baby. You go, girl. Godspeed. And who knows? Maybe Fox is funny, has great chemistry with the other cast members and will manage to knock my socks off. I know that’s a tall order, but I believe in her.
