The Carolina Hurricanes left the St. Louis Blues black and blue after a 4-1 win in the Scottrade Center Thursday night to mark their fourth consecutive victory.
The Hurricanes (20-18-7) played the game away from home against the Blues (25-15-7) but not away from family. Fathers of the Canes joined the team on the trip to Missouri.
“Everybody wants to perform well in front of the dads,” center Jay McClement told nhl.com. “They want to celebrate a win just as much as everybody else.”
It was a slow opening period, as there were only 11 shots taken on goal: five by the Canes and six by the Blues.
Both teams accrued two penalties, but Carolina came out on top, winning 10 of the 16 faceoffs.
The Hurricanes came in fast and furious in the second period, attacking the St. Louis goal with 15 shots on goal compared to the Blues’ 5.
Forward Jeff Skinner scored early, his 17th of the season, and was assisted by forward Andrej Nestrasil.
Second to score for the Hurricanes was Brett Pesce, a rookie defenseman, assisted by forward Victor Rask and defenseman Jaccob Slavin. The goal came early in the third period.
Rookie forward Brock McGinn scored shortly after Pesce in the third. His goal was assisted by Skinner.
The Blues changed out the goalie and quickly got on the board with a goal by center Jori Lehtera.
Forward Elias Lindholm was penalized for tripping Colton Parayko coming toward the close of the last period.
With under five minutes left in regulation, forward Riley Nash put one in the net for the Canes to make the lead three points. Hainsey came in with the assist on the wrist shot.
St. Louis beat the Canes in goal shots in the third, 13-8, but came up short in overall faceoff wins 28-23.
Top performers of the night were Skinner, Pesce, and Hainsey. Skinner and Pesce had about 15 minutes of play each while Hainsey had almost double the time on the ice for the Canes.
Hurricanes take the ice in PNC Arena against the Vancouver Canucks Friday night, looking to extend their winning streak to five games.
