The NC State women’s basketball team dominated NC Central, 83-33 at Reynolds Coliseum Wednesday.
The Wolfpack (9-2) cruised past the Eagles (1-7) in a 50-point winning margin. The Pack bench scored 49 points tonight in the winning effort, as freshman guard Aislinn Konig led the way with 26 points and five rebounds.
“Ace [Konig] showed how well she can shoot the ball,” head coach Wes Moore said. “She has a bright future ahead, no doubt.”
NC State opened the game with high intensity as it went on a 15-2 run. The run was lead by senior guard Dominique Wilson, who tallied eight points shooting 3 of 3 from the field during the run.
The Pack ended the quarter on a 12-2 run to increase its lead, 27-4. The Wolfpack shared the ball very well as five of the eight players who played in the first quarter scored more than three points. The Eagles were not able to find the bottom of the net, as they shot 2 of 15 from the field and 0 of 2 from behind the arc.
The Eagles continued to struggle in the beginning of the second quarter, as they shot 0 of 9 and committed four turnovers before the halfway mark of the quarter.
The Pack found a groove from the free throw line in the second as it shot 11 of 13 from the line and led 42-10 at half. Senior guard Miah Spencer led the way with a stat line of seven points, four assists, five rebounds and two steals at the half.
The third quarter saw nothing different from the previous two, as NC State dominated every possession it had. Junior forward Chelsea Nelson led the way as she added six points to her totals, shooting 3 of 3 from the field. The Pack led, 60-16 at the end of the quarter.
The Pack opened the fourth quarter by increasing its lead to 50 points, as it went on a 13-7 run to make the score, 73-23. The Pack finished the quarter strong to win the game, 83-33. Konig led the way in the fourth as she tallied 14 points, which gave her 26 points on the night.
“Our seniors and starters started off really well and made it very difficult for the other team to keep up and they got tired, and that really allowed me to push [the ball],” Konig said. “I have such great teammates who I can kick to really forces the defense not to stick on one person, and that opens it up for me.”
The Eagles were able to shoot their best field goal percentage, as they shot 40 percent from the field in the fourth. Senior guard Morgan Jones tallied five points, which gave her 10 points on the night.
The Pack held the Eagles to under 10 points in every quarter except the fourth. The Pack was also able to go deep in its bench, as 12 players logged at least 11 minutes.
“[The starters] did a great job at getting us off to a big start,” Moore said. “That allowed us the luxury of playing the younger players a lot of minutes and getting them a little more experience as we get closer to ACC play.”
NC State goes away for its next game as it takes on Tulane Saturday in New Orleans.
