The Carolina Hurricanes topped the Tampa Bay Lightning, 1-0, in overtime Sunday night at PNC Arena.
Led by netminder Cam Ward, who stopped 30 shots en route to a shutout, and forward Phil Di Giuseppe, who scored the game winner, the Hurricanes (10-10-5) ended a three-game losing streak and won their sixth straight at home.
“You can’t afford to get on a slide,” Ward said. “We’ve had a bit of a difficult time scoring and putting pucks into the net. But I thought tonight, we didn’t worry about that. It was a 0-0, tight game, and it had that sense it was only going to take one. We played smart, we didn’t press or take too many chances.”
Di Giuseppe had a quality chance to score in the third period but wasn’t able to put it home after losing his footing.
“The goalie dove down and I had the whole net [open],” Di Giuseppe said. “I fanned on it. I had my head down, couldn’t believe it.”
While he couldn’t convert that chance, Di Giuseppe certainly made up for it in overtime, as he snapped a quick shot past the leg of Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop and into the net. The goal was his first point of the season in 15 total games played.
Ward, as he has been since Nov. 1, was sensational in net, coming up with big-time saves when the Canes needed them the most. The shutout was his second of the year, the first coming in a lighter, 22-save performance against San Jose Nov. 15.
In addition to Ward and Di Giuseppe, the Hurricanes NHL-leading penalty kill came up big against Tampa Bay’s league-leading power play. The Lightning had five total power plays, including a crucial, abbreviated 5-on-3 in the third period. Carolina killed off all five and limited the number of quality chances.
“It’s huge,” Carolina forward Jeff Skinner said. “Especially late in the third period, you get down on a 5-on-3. That’s a skilled bunch over there; they’ve got a pretty good PP. PK has been huge for us all year. It comes up big in big moments like that.”
The Canes once again leave the friendly confines of PNC Arena, this time for a three-game California road trip, beginning Wednesday night in Anaheim.
