Junior Logan Harrell took first overall among individual performers and the N.C. State men’s golf team finished second out of 15 teams at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Invitational Tuesday.
The victory marks the first of Harrell’s career at N.C. State, finishing 3-under 213. This is the fourth individual title for the Wolfpack at the event in the last six years. Pack great Matt Hill took the 2008 and 2010 titles and Mitch Sutton claimed the prize in 2011.
“Today was a really good day,” Harrell said. “Everything just kind of came together.”
N.C. State finished second overall at 13-over 877 following an impressive 5-under 283 final round Tuesday. Duke took first place, finishing three shots ahead of State, and Wake Forest finished third at 20-over.
Harrell started his day off in a tie for seventh but grabbed seven birdies in his first 12 holes and finished at 6-under 66.
“This probably one of the best rounds, if not the best round, I’ve ever played in competition,” Harrell said. “I drove the ball really well. In my irons, I was just hitting the right spots and really, I just hit the ball extremely well today.”
Junior All-American Albin Choi shot a 1-over 73 in the final round, finishing 1-under 215 to tie for third, his eighth top-6 finish in nine tournaments this season.
Senior Mitch Sutton tied for fifth at 2-over 218, finishing the tournament with 10 birdies.
Freshman Carter Page rebounded from a tough day Monday with a 2-under 70 final round, improving his placement by 14 spots in the tournament.
“You’ve got to give [Page] credit,” Harrell said. “It’s tough to come back from playing poorly. That shows a lot of character.”
Freshman Chad Cox had a less than stellar tournament performance, finishing 71st overall at +19, but had a solid final round, hitting a 2-over 74.
N.C. State will play again April 6-7 at the Irish Creek Collegiate in Kannapolis, N.C.
