Several N.C. State students woke up to heavy smoke early Saturday morning when a fire started at the University Commons apartment complex, leaving 25 people homeless, according to reports.
The flames erupted on the roof of one of the complex’s buildings at 4 a.m. after a cigarette was thrown away without being fully extinguished, according to the News & Observer.
The fire spread to all of the 12 units, causing severe damage, according to North Carolina News.
It took over 50 firefighters about two hours to fully put out the fire.
Christopher Martin, junior in chemistry and University Commons resident, told ABC 11 the fire not only burned his belongings, but his school work, as well. The University has not revealed if any modifications will be made for affected students in regards to upcoming finals.
The Red Cross reached out to affected residents, though some already contacted friends and family, according to ABC 11.
No one was harmed in the fire, and all residents were evacuated, according to reports.
The complex is located at 1501 Graduate Lane on Gorman Street. Most residents are N.C. State students.
