Campus Enterprises hosted a golf tournament on Friday to help raise money for the Carol Johnson Poole Clubhouse.
The clubhouse, which is scheduled to be completed by Dec. 15, is entirely funded by private donations, according to Jennifer Gilmore, the director of marketing and communications for Campus Enterprises. The Legends of N.C. State Tournament helped contribute to the $6 million Campus Enterprises hopes to raise for the clubhouse. Currently, 85 percent of funding has already been raised, Gilmore said.
This is the second year the tournament has taken place with more than 10 “legends,” or members of the community who have contributed significantly to N.C. State Athletics. Members included Terry Harvey, Matt Hill, Terrence Holt and Page Marsh.
All but one legend are alumni of N.C. State. Terry Harvey, who received his bachelors in humanities and social sciences from N.C. State in 1997, was both the quarterback and pitcher for N.C. State football and baseball teams. He ranked fourth in career passing yards and touchdowns while also setting records in baseball wins.
Page Marsh, currently in her 13th season as the coach of N.C. State’s women’s golf team, also played in the tournament.
Gilmore said the Player’s Retreat, which currently has a location on Oberlin Road, is the official food service provider for the clubhouse. The two-story clubhouse also includes academic programs, golf team facilities, public locker rooms, dining rooms, a golf shop, televisions, fireplaces and a fire pit overlooking the Raleigh skyline.
“Students and alumni will take pride in this Clubhouse,” Gilmore said.
There are spaces inside the Clubhouse that can be rented for meetings or weddings, according to Gilmore. Clubhouse services are available to the entire public.
The Clubhouse also provides locker rooms for the golf teams and offices for the coaches. According to Gilmore, there will be golf simulators that gather information about a player’s swing while they are practicing via video.
Gilmore said students interning in golf management can collaborate with the men’s and women’s golf teams to help improve its swing.
Dan Adams, associate vice chancellor for Campus Enterprises, said the versatility and attractiveness of the Carol Johnson Clubhouse will encourage more people to come.
“It will truly be amongst the top college golf courses around the country,” Adams said.
“It’s an outstanding collegiate golf course designed by our own.”
Adams said that the course was designed with sustainability in mind. The course is maintained to be environmentally-friendly.
Gilmore said students can register for a package plan and rent spaces in the Clubhouse. Student costs at the golf course are not included in tuition or student fees.
“When we provide state of the art facilities, it puts students in the right frame of mind.” Gilmore said. “It’s important being able to demonstrate that we are the best, cutting edge facility to attract future golf professionals.”
