N.C. State defeated its rival UNC-Chapel Hill Saturday night, 91-83, in front of a sold-out PNC Arena, snapping the Tar Heels 13-game winning streak against the Wolfpack. The Pack never trailed in the contest.
State remains undefeated in home contests on the season.
The team’s all-around contributions and ability to control the fast break scoring early on gave the Pack an upper hand. At the half State led the Tar Heels, 20-0 in fast break points, usually a staple and powerful weapon of Chapel Hill head coach Roy Williams guided teams. By the games end, the Pack totaled 39 fast break points, compared to the Tar Heels’ 19.
Five players, senior forwards Richard Howell and Scott Wood, junior forward Calvin Leslie and guard Lorenzo Brown, and freshman forward T.J. Warren, finished in double figures.
Brown, Leslie and Howell finished with double-doubles. Howell scored 16 points, adding 14 boards. Leslie tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds. Wood scored 12 points and Brown dropped in a team-high 20 points and 11 assists.
State attacked sophomore forward James Michael McAdoo early in the paint. He picked up two early fouls, leading to his departure from the game just 1:58 into the game. With McAdoo out early, the Pack outscored Chapel Hill, 22-10, in the first half.
McAdoo would eventually foul out of the game with 17.4 second remaining in the second half.
With the ability to attack from the inside out, the Pack attacked and fired on all cylinders, jumping out to a quick lead. At halftime the Pack went into the locker room up 45-26.
The lead would continue to grow, to as many as 28 points at the 13:22 mark of the second half, but Chapel Hill slowly cut the lead making the Wolfpack work hard for the win.
In the waning minutes of the game the Tar Heels made a run, and cut the lead to as little as five points, but State held on for the victory.
State shot just under its third-ranked field goal percentage, 51 percent, finishing 49.2 percent for the game.
