In an attempt to stop students from flocking to the recently opened Hunt Library, D.H. Hill has taken to a new strategy — trapping students in elevators.
While minding his own business in D.H. Hill Tuesday evening, Shawn Murray, a junior in creative writing, fell victim the library’s latest scheme.
Murray entered an elevator at about 11:45 p.m. in what he thought would be a routine trip to the book stacks, little did he know he would remain in that elevator against his will until about 1:10 a.m.
“I stepped into the elevator, pressed the button and then the elevator kind of jolted a bit,” Murray said. “After a while I noticed that the floor sign had said ‘one’ for the longest time.”
Realizing the elevator was stuck, Murray proceeded to do what any normal college student would do — document the event on Instagram.
After pushing the emergency call button and informing Campus Police that he was stuck in the elevator, Murray uploaded a picture of the elevator he was trapped in to the photo-sharing site to let his friends know how he was spending his evening.
“While I was in there I got bored, so I entertained myself,” Murray said. “I find humor in everything, so I found humor in that too.”
Though Murray said his extended stay in the elevator did not distress him, he said his friends were worried about his well-being and even called Campus Police on his behalf.
“I think my friends were more worried about me than I was,” Murray said.
An elevator serviceman freed Murray after nearly an hour and a half, which was much to his friends’ relief.
Murray said that he does not plan to hold the unfortunate incident against D.H. Hill or the elevator, which he said did not bear the seal of Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry’s approval.
“I’m lazy, and I’m going to be lazy forever. What happened the other night isn’t going to change that,” Murray said. “I’m still going to take the elevator to the second floor if I can.”
The elevator was closed for maintenance as of Wednesday morning, according to Murray.
