The N.C. State softball team continued its fine form Sunday afternoon at Dail Softball Stadium by completing a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Panthers with a 5-1 victory. The win improves the Wolfpack to 13-6 overall and 6-0 in the ACC.
“Three conference wins is a great weekend, period,” N.C. State head coach Shawn Rychcik said. “I thought we hit the ball really well. We were prepared for what we were going to get. That goes to my assistants, getting us prepared and knowing what we needed to do.”
The Wolfpack jumped on the Panthers early, scoring single runs in the first two innings. Pitt responded with a run in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit in half, but N.C. State countered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs. Junior shortstop Renanda Davis paced the Pack, going three-for-four at the plate and scoring one run while sophomore designated player Hannah Sommer also drove in three runs.
“I am very happy, [Saturday] I felt like I could have done better,” Davis said. “I came out a little bit more focused. Our lineup is coming together, our fielding is coming together and it looks really promising.”
State has won 11 straight games overall and 18 ACC games in a row, including the conference tournament. The Pack has not a game in league play in almost 11 months.
“I felt really good with how we matched up with them and what lineup we put out over the weekend,” Rychcik said. “I think we have found our routine. People are getting comfortable at the plate and we are starting to produce a little bit.”
N.C. State will have a brief sojourn from the rigors of conference play on Tuesday when the Pack hosts Radford for a doubleheader, completing an 11-game homestand. State has not lost a game at Dail this season.
“We are getting some good hitting and we have played good defense all year,” Rychcik said. “We are going to take things one series at a time. It’s way too early to start worrying about where we are going to finish right now.”
