The No. 6 N.C. State Wolfpack defeated Notre Dame, 7-0, at Doak Field Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep of the Fighting Irish over the weekend.
The Wolfpack improved to 13-2 overall, including 3-0 in the ACC with the win. The Irish dropped to 5-9 overall and were swept in its first ever series as a member of the ACC.
State’s sophomore pitcher Brad Stone went six-plus innings for his third win of the season. The left-hander from Charlotte allowed two hits and four walks while striking out five batters. The sophomore said he was fine with his performance Sunday.
“I’m okay with it, I have got a lot of work to do,” Stone said. “It’s our first conference [series]. We’ll take a sweep anytime we can get it.”
State jumped out in front in the third inning, pushing four runs across the plate. Junior first baseman Jake Armstrong highlighted the frame with a two-run single.
“Anytime you can get some run support, it gives you that much more confidence going into the next inning,” Stone said.
While the Wolfpack was able to score three more runs in the seventh inning, the Pack only had seven hits in the game. N.C. State head coach Elliott Avent said he still has concerns with his team’s hitting woes.
“I didn’t think we played all that well to be honest,” Avent said. “We have got to start having better at-bats. We are not swinging the bats. [Notre Dame] had nine walks, they hit [freshman first baseman Kyle] Cavanaugh and they had an error. We had seven runs on only seven hits.”
After Stone walked two batters in the seventh inning, Avent went to the bullpen and said he was pleased with what he saw.
“We have several guys that can do the job,” Avent said. “We weren’t sure we had a bullpen when the season started, but our bullpen has been outstanding. We are not getting our bullpen enough work right now to be honest.”
N.C. State returns to action Tuesday with a game at Stetson prior to a big three-game tilt vs. No. 2 Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla., beginning Friday.
