1. No. 1 Florida State (26-5, 13-2 ACC) — There is no argument that the Seminoles are dominating the ACC. They lead the conference in runs-per-game (7.94), are ahead of Clemson (6.87) by a sizeable margin and boast the second-best ERA (2.87) in the conference. Florida State faces a challenging schedule for the rest of the year after two easy series against Boston College and Notre Dame.
2. No. 14 Clemson (20-10, 9-4) — No. 14 Clemson lost two of three games to N.C. State this weekend, but has otherwise remained a power to be feared in the ACC with its aggressive offense. In 16 of the their 20 wins this season, the Tigers have scored more than five runs, a testament to their conference-leading 10.37 hits per game and .298 team batting average.
3. Wake Forest (22-12, 10-5) — Wake Forest took two of three games against ACC Atlantic Division foe Maryland this past weekend in Winston-Salem. The Demon Deacons have won nine of its last 11 and are in good shape at the midway point of the ACC season.
4. Maryland (19-10, 6-8) — A disappointing series loss against Wake Forest leaves the Terps just ahead of the bottom portion of the Atlantic Division.
5. North Carolina State (18-13, 7-8) — Although it managed to break its slump Sunday at Clemson, State is struggling to find unity on the field. If the Wolfpack wishes to qualify for the ACC Tournament, it needs to win three of its four upcoming games this coming week in the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
6. Notre Dame (10-20, 1-13) — In the midst of a two-series losing streak, the Fighting Irish are floundering to stay above Boston College in the rankings. Both teams will duke it out in Notre Dame, Ind. this weekend to determine the best of the worst of the Atlantic Division.
7. Boston College (10-20, 2-13) — Despite a recent, albeit close, win against UNC-Chapel Hill, Boston College has shown virtually no promise for the season. The Eagles have taken a firm hold of the conference’s cellar in multiple categories, notably in hits per game (7.40) and runs scored per game (3.17). BC has lost 17 of its last 21 games, setting a dismal tone for the rest of their season.
Coastal Division
1. Virginia (27-5, 12-3 ACC) — No. 2 Virginia is on track to return to the NCAA Championships. The Cavaliers had their nine-game win streak broken this Saturday at Pittsburgh, but sophomore pitcher Nathan Kirby continues to defy even his high standards, posting a no-hitter Sunday and striking out 18 in the process. Kirby has asserted his hold on best ERA (1.03) and most wins (7) in the ACC. If any pitching staff in the conference is capable of putting up a roadblock in front of the Seminoles’ offense, it is Virginia.
2. Miami (21-12, 11-4) — No. 24 Miami returned from Blacksburg, Va. with its second sweep in a row. Momentum could be in favor of the Hurricanes after back-to-back series sweeps as they host a weekend series against a surprising Pitt squad.
3. Pitt (16-15, 8-7) — Pittsburgh continues to rise in the rankings, despite losing four of their last seven contests. The Panthers ran a tight ship against the Cavaliers this weekend, scraping out a win Saturday to end Virginia’s nine-game win streak. Pitt will be a contender in the ACC Tournament, but will be tested this coming weekend when it travels to Miami for a three-game series with the ‘Canes.
4. Georgia Tech (19-13, 8-7) — The Yellow Jackets move into a difficult portion of their schedule this weekend against Florida State. The series against the ‘Noles precedes a three-series series against Maryland, which could make or break either team’s season.
5. Duke (17-16, 7-8) — Duke has had a cut-and-dry season thus far, losing games to better teams and winning against those it should. The Blue Devils were recently swept by Georgia Tech, but will face a sputtering N.C. State team this weekend at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
6. North Carolina (18-13, 7-8) — The Heels came back from Boston College with two wins in three games. Carolina has seven losses in its last 10 contests, and is running out of time to recover and make it back to Omaha this year.
7. Virginia Tech (14-15, 5-10) — The Hokies held their own after two one-point games against No. 1 Florida State, despite being swept. If Tech manages to play well against Maryland and Duke, it has potential to shoot up in the standings.
