The Student Veterans Association staked 1,191 American flags into the lawn of the Court of North Carolinas this weekend as a salute to veterans in honor of the upcoming Veterans Day on Nov.11. Each of the flags represents a veteran currently at NC State.
The flags will be out until Nov. 14, the day before the Military Appreciation football game.
“We wanted to honor all of the student, faculty and staff veterans at the university,” said Tina Nelson-Moss, the NC State Student Veterans Association advisor. “This is just one way we can give back to that.”
The Student Veterans Association chose the Court of North Carolina as the grounds for the flags because of the large amount of space and the area’s high level of foot traffic.
“We wanted to make sure it was noticeable and people remembered the veterans,” Nelson-Moss said.
Kyle Townsend, freshman in First Year College said he appreciated the Student Veterans Association’s gesture.
“I have a sense of gratitude for those who served,” Townsend said. “Not only does it look pretty, but it shows a sense of pride that our school has for the military.”
This is the third year the Student Veterans Association has used flags to commemorate veterans at NC State. The first year they chose Harris Fields as the location to put more than 1,000 American flags. Sadly, some of the flags did not survive the event.
“We had some problems with people stealing and damaging the flags and even vandalizing them,” Nelson-Moss said.
As a result, the Student Veterans Association decided to move the location to the Court of Carolinas to reduce the likelihood of these problems occurring again.
Jacob Wiggins, sophomore in mathematics, also enjoyed the event.
“It really makes me appreciate my opportunity to go to college, knowing that so many people have fought to protect my country to keep all of us safe at home,” Wiggins said.
