NC State softball won its final nonconference game before ACC play starts on Wednesday, March 2, executing a late comeback to beat Elon 6-4.
The Phoenix (9-5) got the bats going in the first inning, scoring two runs off an error and two hits. The Wolfpack (16-2) finally answered in the third, when fifth-year third baseman Logan Morris hit a three-run home run to take the lead 3-2. The Phoenix could not break the lead in the third after two quick outs and an impressive catch by fifth-year center fielder Brittany Jackson, leaving two on in scoring position.
Graduate left-handed pitcher Maddie McPherson started in the circle and despite giving up two runs, two walks and two hits, the Wolfpack offense left her in a no decision.
Elon struck back in the fourth and fifth, notching one run each. Redshirt sophomore pitcher Sam Gress gave up three singles to fill the bases before she was relieved. Gress ended with four hits, one run, one walk and one strikeout. She was replaced by redshirt sophomore right-hander Aisha Weixlmann, who threw a wild pitch in the fourth and allowed a run in the fifth to bring the score to 4-3.
The Wolfpack scored again in the sixth to tie the game 4-4. Freshman left fielder Taylor Ensley shot a double to left field to bring in the tying run. In the bottom of the frame, the Wolfpack put out three straight batters to hold the tie and get another chance at bat. Morris hit another bomb over the left field wall to bring in two more runs, taking the lead 6-4. Weixlmann struck out two batters and forced a fly out to secure her sixth win of the season.
Morris ended up going 2 for 4 with five RBIs, two homers and kept her batting average above .500. Weixlmann ended with seven strikeouts, one run allowed on three hits.
The Wolfpack comes back to Raleigh to face Syracuse this weekend to start ACC play. Syracuse is 9-4 so far and is coming off a loss to Auburn. The two will meet from March 4-6.
