No. 19 NC State gymnastics escaped Texas Woman’s University by just .075 points on Sunday in Texas, outlasting the Pioneers 196.675 to 196.600. The Wolfpack earned individual titles in every event to preserve its undefeated record against the Pioneers going back to 2009.
The Wolfpack (7-7) started the night off on the bars, where freshman Caroline Volk led the way for the second week in a row. Volk once again tied her career high of 9.925 to take first place in the event while junior Madeline Reid earned a 9.875 to take the third place slot, her first podium finish of the season. Despite Reid and Volk’s efforts, the Pioneers (6-10) outscored NC State 49.325 to 49.275 in the event.
Sophomore Ashley Knight started the Pack off strong on the vault, matching her career-high of 9.925 to lead the visiting Pack to a team score of 49.200 on the event that bested the Pioneers’ 48.975, which was NC State’s largest victory margin of the night. Junior Meg Adler and graduate student Krista Zultevicz each posted a 9.850 — a season best for Adler — to earn a tie for second place.
The Pack continued to dominate on the floor, besting the Pioneers 49.300 to 49.125. Knight, graduate Chloe Negrete and sophomore Elle Hadrick landed in a four-way tie for first place in a critical victory. Zultevicz matched her season-best 9.850 on the event.
The Pioneers defeated the red-and-white on the beam, totaling a score of 49.175 to the Pack’s 48.900. Negrete led all scorers with her mark of 9.900. Adler scored a 9.850 to tie her season best for the second time that night and placed second in the event. Its score on the beam was the red-and-white’s lowest of the night, a mark that it will certainly look to improve on with ACC Championships fast approaching.
NC State is set to wrap up its regular season with a quad-meet next week when it travels to Washington, D.C. to take on Maryland, Towson and the hosting George Washington Revolutionaries. The Wolfpack has competed in a quad-meet and tri-meet this season already and finished last in both of them. This upcoming meet is a perfect opportunity for the Wolfpack to pick up three wins as the three other schools are ranked below the Wolfpack.
Competition is set to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday.
