Coming off of its first team victory since 2017 at the Daniel Island Invitational, NC State women’s golf took seventh at the Briars Creek Invitational in John’s Island, South Carolina.
Due to inclement weather, the typical 54-hole tournament format had to be adjusted, and competitors played just 36 holes.
NC State’s strongest performers, senior Lauren Olivares Leon and freshman Marie Eline Madsen, tied for 13th at even par. The next highest finisher was sophomore Ellise Rymer, who tied for 32nd, but she was competing as an individual. The next officially competing team member was senior Caitlin Whitehead, who tied for 54th.
In a larger field that featured 17 teams and 100 competitors, including No. 6 ranked Florida State, the Pack struggled to break through the way it did at Daniel Island.
Olivares finished her first round at 1-over par, and the second at 1-under par to total at even par. This season, Olivares has been the epitome of consistency, with only two over-par rounds in the last four tournaments, a pair of 73s. Olivares started off her senior season with an average placement of 32 in the first three tournaments but has improved her average placement to seventh in the most recent four.
Madsen played the first round at 3-under par and finished the day tied for fifth, but along with much of the field, second-round struggles kept her out of contention as she shot 75 in Round 2.
Coming off of a career performance placing fifth at the Daniel Island Invitational to help the Pack secure the win, junior Vania Simont had an underwhelming performance, placing 80th and shooting 14-over par. Simont had a solid first round, shooting 73, but a disastrous 85 in the second round brought her down to the bottom quarter of the leaderboard.
Rymer finished at 4-over par with two rounds of 74. This tournament was the first this season where Rymer made the trip as an individual, rather than a scoring team member. Rymer had finished outside of the top 50 in the last four tournaments. Getting benched likely motivated her performance in the Briars Creek Invitational, or maybe the England native’s experience in wet weather conditions helped her to get back into the top 50 while others struggled.
Whitehead placed tied for 54th with a score of 9-over par, with rounds of 76 and 77. She had the second-lowest Par-3 average for the tournament, recording four birdies on Par-3s in the tournament.
Graduate Jaclyn Kenzel placed tied for 65th with a score of 10-over par, with rounds of 79 and 75.
The Pack will next see action when it hosts the City of Oaks Collegiate at Lonnie Poole Golf Course Mar. 21-22.
