No. 12 NC State women’s tennis had an action-packed weekend with three matches in as many days to close its 2025 regular season campaign.
The Wolfpack first took down No. 18 Cal on Friday, sweeping the Golden Bears 4-0, before facing off against a perennially excellent Stanford team and ECU in a Sunday doubleheader to close out the regular season. While the Pack outlasted Stanford in a 4-3 victory, it etched its second sweep of the weekend in a 4-0 rout over the Pirates.
NC State versus No. 18 Cal, 4-0 win
NC State began its weekend with a dominant sweep over No. 18 Cal, good for its sixth ranked win of the season.
The Wolfpack secured the doubles point with a 6-1 win from junior Anna Zyryanova and freshman Jasmine Conway on Court 2, followed by a 6-3 win on Court 3 from sophomore Kristina Paskauskas and freshman Mia Slama.
Meanwhile, the struggling pair of No. 3 sophomores Maddy Zampardo and Gabriella Broadfoot fell 6-4 to finish the round off, marking the pair’s first of two losses on the weekend.
NC State was surgical in singles, winning three straight matches to take down the Golden Bears.
The win came without standout freshman Michaela Laki, who has been sidelined since suffering a severe leg injury during NC State’s 4-1 win over Miami on April 6. Head coach Simon Earnshaw confirmed Laki will be out for at least the remainder of the team’s 2025 season.
In her absence on Court 1, Earnshaw’s entire team moved up one spot each. Against Cal, that was no issue, as sophomore Kristina Paskauskas earned the first singles win of the weekend in a 6-3, 6-2 victory on Court 4.
Gabia Paskauskas, Kristina’s younger sister and teammate, came into her own on Sunday against Stanford and commented on the strong relationship between the two both on and off the court.
“We’re best friends, on and off the court,” Gabia Paskauskas said. “We help each other no matter what. If I’ve got something that I need to discuss with anyone, I’m going straight to her. She gives amazing advice, she’s a great older sister. I really look up to her. And her mentality is great as well.”
No. 89 Zampardo was the next to claim victory on Friday with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 ranked win over Cal’s No. 38 Jessica Alsola. In clinch position, No. 109 Broadfoot upset No. 43 Lan Mi in three competitive sets, the first of which included a tiebreak win from Broadfoot, to clinch the match win.
Versus Stanford, 4-3 win
After two straight seasons facing the most storied college tennis program in the NCAA Tournament, NC State battled the Cardinal for the first time as an ACC opponent. The Wolfpack got the better of its new ACC foe via a clutch win from Gabia Paskauskas on the last court remaining in singles.
After a doubles round win and a pair of singles victories from Slama and an impressive rout from No. 77 Zyryanova over No. 10 Connie Ma, the Paskauskas sisters battled side-by-side on Courts 4 and 6. Only needing one more win to clinch the match win, their support came from each other and a packed crowd behind them.
While Kristina Paskauskas fell in three sets, No. 96 Gabia Paskauskas earned her first clinching victory for the Wolfpack on Court 6, beating Stanford’s Chidimma Okpara 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
“Having my sister beside me playing, I felt really comfortable,” Gabia Paskauskas said. “I felt like we were really helping each other on the court — as she was playing, I was feeding off her energy, she was feeding off my energy.”
Once her sister’s match ended, though, the moment shifted.
“It all went quiet and you need to deal with your own thoughts and your own emotions, without any help from anyone else,” she said. “Obviously, the crowd was there. They were uplifting me and helping me and supporting me.”
However, earlier on in singles, Zyryanova pulled off an even more impressive feat. Pitted against Ma, one of the best players in the nation with a nearly unblemished 2025 record, Zyryanova was ruthless. Working Ma around the court and striking winners with pinpoint accuracy, the Pack’s junior defeated her formidable opponent 6-1, 6-3.
“The reason we won this match was Anna had the win of her life,” Earnshaw said. “That’s the best match she’s ever played. Ever. Yeah, clearly she can play [Court] number one. I mean, no doubt about it, which obviously we need. We need people to step up.”
Even after a close doubles loss — earned for the Pack by wins from Conway and Zyryanova and Kristina Paskauskas and Mia Slama — Stanford made singles tough for NC State. The Cardinal beat Zampardo and Broadfoot in straight sets in addition to beating Paskauskas late.
Regardless, the early two-set wins from Slama and Zyryanova ultimately put Gabia Paskauskas in position to bring home the victory late in the match.
Versus ECU, 4-0 win
NC State pulled off one more win in the second match of its Sunday doubleheader. The Wolfpack put on a dominant performance over ECU in its season finale, commanding the doubles round and executing an equally quick singles round.
Broadfoot and Zampardo got back on track after two straight doubles losses against Stanford and Cal with a sweeping 6-0 win on Court 1. Kristina Paskauskas and Slama followed up with a round-winning 6-2 victory on Court 3.
NC State started off singles with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win from Slama. Next came Broadfoot’s 6-0, 6-1 win over ECU’s Martina Muzzolon. To finish the Pirates off, Gabia Paskauskas earned her second victory of the day in a 6-1, 6-2 win on Court 5 to earn the Pack’s sixteenth win of the season and finish off its undefeated home streak in 2025.
NC State begins play in the ACC Tournament in Cary on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
