A UNC-Chapel Hill student was arrested after breaking into two student apartments in University Towers early Friday morning, according to a WRAL report.
Luke Matthew Wilkinson, a first-year student at UNC-Chapel Hill, faces multiple charges including first- and second-degree burglary, larceny after breaking and entering, possessing a fraudulent ID, resisting a public officer and underage alcohol consumption.
The incidents occurred around 3:00 a.m., with residents asleep inside both apartments at the time of the break-ins.
Wilkinson reportedly entered the apartments with another man who recorded the break-ins. They entered the apartments with a bottle of vodka and took two granola bars from one of the apartments.
During the incident, Wilkinson attempted to provide officers with a fake ID, leading to additional charges.
NC State did not issue a WolfAlert as Wilkinson was arrested immediately.
Lauren Barker, senior media relations strategist at NC State, emphasized the importance of securing living spaces in an email statement to Technician, noting that the involved apartment doors were left unlocked.
“We want to take this opportunity to remind members of the campus community of the importance of securing their living spaces,” Barker wrote. “Always lock your doors and windows — even when you’re home — and never leave them propped open or unsecured.”
University Towers requires access via Wolfpack One Card. Barker warned against letting individuals into buildings with private access while entering and exiting the locked doors.
“Please do not allow individuals you do not recognize to ‘tailgate’ or follow you into residence halls or secured areas,” Barker wrote.
Wilkinson remains in custody without bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
