NC State track and field delivered a packed, standout week with top NCAA marks, personal bests and podium finishes across three meets.
Competing at the Wake Forest Invitational, Tom Jones Memorial and Virginia Challenge, the Wolfpack saw strong results from all facets of the squad.
Wake Forest Invitational
The Wolfpack distance crew headlined the weekend at the Wake Forest Invitational, earning several top NCAA marks and personal bests across a stacked field.
Sophomore Angelina Napoleon led the way with a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase invite, running a personal-best 9:29.20. The time ranks No. 3 in NCAA Division I this season and continues to improve her program record.
Senior Sam Bush recorded a season-best 4:10.94 in the 1,500-meter invite, finishing ninth and earning the No. 11 time nationally this season. Next, she placed seventh in the 5,000 meter at 15:53.90. Freshman Bethany Michalak edged her for fourth with a time of 15:43.84, a personal best.
In the throws, sophomore Natalie Griffith moved into the program’s all-time top 10 in the discus, finishing eighth with a mark of 41.79 meters. Junior Clara Willard also placed in the top 15.
On the men’s side, senior Patrick Tuohy clocked 1:48.60 in the 800-meter invite to finish 16th. Senior Miles Ally notched a personal-best 1:51.93 in the open section to place 22nd, while freshman Ryan Motondo ran a PR of 3:50.91 in the 1,500 meter.
After not finishing in the 1,500 meter, junior Jimmy Mullarkey posted a personal best of 14:22.38 in the 5,000 meter, placing 18th.
Tom Jones Memorial
The Wolfpack sent a handful of its top throwers to Gainesville, Florida for the Tom Jones Memorial on Friday and Saturday.
Junior thrower Katie Horne topped her personal best in the javelin, throwing 48.55 meters for a sixth-place finish. Horne’s performance extended a program record she has broken six times since setting it in 2023.
In the hammer throw, graduate Makala Wright finished 10th with a mark of 53.86 meters. Senior Sydney Freeman also surpassed the 50 meter mark, placing 19th.
Sophomore Tony Taylor II competed in the shot put and hammer throw, earning a top-20 finish in both. The Raleigh native was a two-time high school Adidas National Elite Champion.
Virginia Challenge
NC State athletes produced a slate of podium finishes and personal bests at the Virginia Challenge, highlighted by skillful performances in the jumps and hurdles.
Graduate Brett Gardner led the distance crew with a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase invite, running 8:29.65. On the track, freshman James Coleman captured first place in the 400-meter hurdles, setting a personal-best time of 52.90, while sophomore Xavier Branker placed sixth in the invite section.
In the men’s long jump, sophomore Tyson Adams soared to second place with a mark of 8.05 meters. On the women’s side, freshman Mariama Hunt earned her first career podium finish with a third-place jump of 6.43 meters.
Hunt added a fifth-place finish in the triple jump, joined by sophomore Jayda Hunter, who placed second with a personal-best leap of 13.16 meters. In the high jump, sophomore Jenna Barnes cleared 1.64 meters to finish fifth, while freshman Audrey Jenkins matched that height for a personal best, finishing 16th.
NC State also collected personal bests in several events, including freshman Brandon Harris in the 100 meter with a time of 10.67, sophomore Judd Armstrong in the high jump leaping 2.06 meters and freshman Asun Pender in the triple jump with a mark of 14.13 meters.
The Wolfpack will get back to action at the Penn Relays, Charlotte Invitational and LSU Alumni Gold meets beginning Thursday, April 24.
