It’s no secret that ACC women’s golf is stacked, especially with the 2024 addition of a historically successful Stanford program.
That depth was on full display at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur — amateur golf’s most prestigious tournament — where 18 of the 72 participants were current or former ACC golfers. The field included NC State senior Lauren Olivares Leon, Florida State’s defending ANWA champion Lottie Woad, and a whopping six Stanford golfers.
Back in conference play, the strength of the ACC showed once again, as NC State women’s golf placed 13th at the ACC Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.
NC State finished with a team score of 43-over par — 70 strokes behind first-place Stanford.
But not all was dreary for the Wolfpack. Freshman Marie Eline Madsen rose to the occasion in her first ACC Championship, tying for 11th.
With her first win at the ECU Ironwood Invitational, Madsen has already accomplished so much in her freshman campaign. After opening rounds of 72 and 71, a disappointing final round moved the Denmark native just outside the top 10, capping a 1-over par performance.
This tournament marks Madsen’s ninth top-15 finish of the season, placing outside that range only once. With a 71.14 stroke average, she is on pace to break the single-season program record of 72.60 set by India Clyburn in the 2016-2017 season.
Olivares Leon placed T43 at 10-over par. The senior did not play up to her standards and collapsed with a final round 79, sliding 25 spots down the leaderboard after sitting at T18 after day one. With a mediocre 76 in round 1, she bounced back on day 2 with an under-par 71 — but all was for naught after her round 3 performance.
Also placing in the top-50 was junior Vania Simont with an 11-over T47 finish. She opened with a pair of 77s to sit at T54, but a final round 73 helped her move up to secure her seventh top-50 of the season.
Graduate Jaclyn Kenzel finished 64th at 21-over par while sophomore Lea Ludwig was 72nd at 27-over par.
Whether or not the Wolfpack’s season continues is in the hands of the selection committee. Despite a poor performance at the ACC Championship, there are many positives to take from the season. The Pack secured its first victory since 2017 at the Daniel Island Invitational and sent its first participant in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur since the tournament was created in 2019.
Even if the team does not secure a bid, Madsen and Olivares will likely be selected as individuals after standout performances this season.
The selection show for NCAA regionals will take place Wednesday, April 24 at 1 p.m. on the Golf Channel.
