With almost every spring sport starting its season and winter sports preparing for the postseason, it was a busy week for NC State athletics. It’s hard to keep track of every event so here’s a breakdown of what happened last week.
Women’s basketball takes down pair of ranked opponents
The first week of February was set to be a litmus test for then-No. 14 NC State women’s basketball, revealing where it stands among the nation’s list. The Wolfpack passed the test with flying colors as it took down then-No. 10 Duke at home and then-No. 22 Florida State on the road.
In the annual Play4Kay game — dedicated toward raising money and awareness for women’s cancer in honor of former coach Kay Yow — NC State took down Duke behind senior guard Aziaha James’s career-high 36 points. After falling down 11 points at halftime, James scored 27 points in the second half, powering the Wolfpack to an 89-83 victory. Nearly $500,000 was raised for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
On Sunday, the Wolfpack traveled down to Florida to take on the No. 1 scoring offense in the country led by the nation’s leading scorer Ta’Niya Latson. The Wolfpack had no problems containing the Seminoles as it held them nearly 20 points under their scoring average and limited Latson to 23 points on under 50% shooting in a 97-74 rout.

Men’s golf wins first tournament of spring schedule
In its first tournament of the spring season, NC State men’s golf secured its second tournament win of the 2024-25 campaign with a victory at the Briars Creek Invitational. Senior Michael Vick led the way for the Wolfpack, securing his first collegiate win with a score of 7-under par. Vick had the best 18-hole round of the tournament with a 67, which was also his personal best.
Vick wasn’t the only golfer who performed well for the Pack. Three other players finished in the top 15 and as a team, the Wolfpack recorded just 43 bogeys — third least in the field.

Men’s basketball goes 0-2 on West Coast trip
NC State men’s basketball has lost eight straight games — its longest losing streak since the 2006-07 season — after falling to California and Stanford last week during its West Coast road trip. The Wolfpack has yet to win a game away from Lenovo Center this season, and it’s been nearly a year since it’s won a true road game.
The Wolfpack’s 74-62 loss to Cal was the Pack’s seventh straight loss, and it marked the most consecutive games NC State has lost under head coach Kevin Keatts. Against the Golden Bears, it was a similar story as almost every other Wolfpack loss. It kept up with Cal in the first half only to fall apart late in the second.
Against Stanford, NC State had a chance to win the game on the last possession, but freshman guard Trey Parker’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer rimmed in and out. Although he missed the game-winning attempt, Parker kept the Wolfpack in the game with a career-high 19 points, but it wasn’t enough to halt the Pack’s losing streak.

Softball opens season with 3-2 record at Black and Gold Classic
NC State softball opened its 2025 season competing at the Black and Gold Classic in Orlando, Florida where it came away with a 3-2 record.
The Wolfpack won its first game of the season with a 3-2 victory over Cal State Bakersfield but lost 9-0 to No. 12 Georgia later in the day. It also split the second day of the tournament, taking down James Madison 5-0 before falling to UCF 3-1. On the last day, the Wolfpack faced James Madison again and secured another win, this time 3-1.
Aside from its game against Georgia, NC State’s pitching thrived while its offense put together timely hits to leave the tournament with a winning record.

Men’s tennis closes road trip with win, women’s tennis secures victory at home
Both No. 19 NC State men’s and women’s tennis went undefeated on the week as the men took down Princeton on the road 4-1 and the women defeated Old Dominion 5-2 at home.
No. 52 freshman Michaela Laki defeated a top-10 opponent for the second time this season when she took down Old Dominion’s No. 6 Sofia Johnson 6-3, 6-3.
The men finished off their month-long non-conference road trip with a win over the Tigers, its first win over an Ivy League school this season after it dropped matches against then-No. 6 Columbia and then-No. 21 Harvard. The men won’t return home until Sunday, Feb. 23 as they are set to compete in the ITA Indoor Championships in Dallas, Texas this week.

Gymnastics wins Pink Meet over Pittsburgh
No. 20 NC State gymnastics hosted its annual Pink Meet Saturday, where those who have battled or are currently battling cancer were honored. The Wolfpack took down Pittsburgh 196.475-193.600 for its second conference win of the season.
Sophomore Ashley Knight recorded two first-place finishes, with one coming on the vault and the other on the floor. Knight has five first-place finishes this year, surpassing the four she had in her freshman season.
