NC State men’s golf finished 10th place in the team’s fourth event of the spring season, with graduate Spencer Oxendine shining with a tie for 14th place. The team shot a total of 876 with rounds of 300, 289 and 287.
South Carolina hosted the Hootie at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, South Carolina. The course played as a par-72 and measured 7,266 yards long.
Oxendine led the Pack with three consistent rounds of 72, 73 and 70, totaling 217. His final round of 70 was highlighted by five birdies and led to a tie for 14th place. The Fayetteville, North Carolina native continues his strong start to the Spring season as the Pack’s top golfer
Not far behind Oxendine was redshirt junior Nick Mathews, who struggled in the opening round with a 76 but responded with a stellar 70 in the second round and capped off the tournament with a 71. Three birdies and an eagle highlighted Mathews’ second round, tying the team’s best round for the tournament.
Junior Jake Wiktor finished third for the Pack with rounds of 76, 72 and 74. Wiktor’s second even-par 72 included two birdies and two bogeys, helping him secure a tie for 45th place and finish six over overall.
Graduate student Carter Graf and senior Ethan Choi both finished tied for 67th place with a total score of 225. Graf struggled in the opening round with a team-high 78 but settled down to finish the tournament with a one-over 73.
NC State struggled all weekend on the par 3s, with a scoring average of 3.24 and an overall score of plus 18, which ranked third to last among all teams in the tournament. The Pack took advantage of the par 5s at Bulls Bay Golf Club with an average score of 4.87 and an overall score of 10 under par. The Pack also shined in overall birdies, totaling 41 throughout the tournament.
If the Pack wants to find itself near the top of the leaderboard on the final day of the tournament, it will need to improve its performance off the tee on par 3s and continue its above-average play on par 5s.
The red-and-white will host the next tournament of the spring season at Lonnie Poole Golf Course. The Stitch Intercollegiate will take place on Friday, April 12 and 13, where the Pack will look to defend home soil and win its first tournament of the spring season.
