NC State women’s golf traveled down to Guadalajara, Mexico to compete in the Collegiate Invitational on Friday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, Feb. 3. The Wolfpack recorded a total score of 907 — 43 over-par — over 54 holes and placed eighth in a field of 12 teams.
Sophomore Vania Simont led the charge for the red-and-white by posting a total score of 224 — eight over-par — that included one round where she shot two under-par and scored a 70. Senior Isabel Amezcua followed close behind with a score of 226 after shooting an even 72 in the first round. Simont tied for 14th overall while Amezcua tied for 19th.
Freshman Ellise Rymer was the third to finish for the Wolfpack. The freshman shot 228 over the three rounds to tie for 26th place. Junior Lauren Olivares Leon finished three strokes behind Rymer to tie for 36th place and senior Jaclyn Kenzel rounded out NC State’s lineup with a score of 236 that landed her in 52nd place.
The meet was hosted by Virginia at the Guadalajara Country Club and it marks the first of five competitions on the Pack’s spring schedule. After coming in eighth place as a team and scoring 29 points higher than first-place finisher No. 10 Florida State, it’s clear that NC State has some room for improvement. The red-and-white finished three strokes behind Cal and one stroke ahead of Maryland.
The Pack’s next round of competition will take place in Sarasota Springs, Florida at the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational. The meet is set for Sunday, Feb. 18 and Monday, Feb. 19 at the Palm Aire Country Club, where the red-and-white will face off against the hosting Michigan Spartans and a number of other collegiate squads.
