NC State swimming and diving hosted UNC-Wilmington at Casey Aquatic Center on Friday, Feb. 2 in a meet that showcased the red-and-white’s ability to blow the competition out of the water.
The No. 3 Wolfpack men defeated the Seahawks 172-104, while the No. 10 NC State women took down the visitors 181-89. The red-and-white placed first in every event in both the men’s and women’s competition, making it extremely difficult for UNC-Wilmington to make a significant impact on the scoreboard.
The Pack honored 23 seniors prior to the event, many of whom have been integral to the team’s immense success over the past couple of years. This group also included senior Conall Monahan, who broke the pool record in the men’s 200-yard breaststroke with his time of one minute, 55.54 seconds. The previous record had stood since 2015.
Fifth-year senior Huner Tapp and senior Michael Moore also showed out, with each notching first-place finishes in their respective events — Moore turned in a time of 1:46.85 in the 200-yard backstroke while Tapp finished the 200-yard freestyle in 1:35.26.
Both fifth-year senior Noah Henderson and graduate student Noah Bowers set pool records against the Seahawks. Bowers touched the wall in 1:41.26 in the men’s 200-yard butterfly while Henderson — who previously shared the pool record in the event — clocked in at 19.13 seconds in the men’s 50-yard freestyle to claim his own record.
Graduate student Katharine Berkoff later joined in on the fun and set a new pool record in the women’s 200-yard backstroke with her time of 1:50.94. Other notable performances on the women’s side included senior Abby Pilkenton’s first-place finish and personal best in the 100-yard backstroke with her time of 54.51 seconds. Senior Yara Hierath did the same in the 200-yard individual medley, clocking in at 2:01.37. Hierath also took first in the 200-yard freestyle.
Freshman Daniel Diehl continued to prove his importance this week, taking first place in two events — the men’s 100-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard freestyle. He qualified for NCAA B standard time with a time of 53.54 seconds in the breaststroke and 43.43 seconds in the freestyle event.
The Pack didn’t let up in the deep end, with fifth-year senior Helene Synnott and sophomore Renato Calderaro continuing to dominate the competition. Synnott scored 303.75 in the 1-meter dive and 320.78 in the 3-meter dive to place first in both events. The senior qualified for NCAA B standards in both events, and senior Clara Tate, sophomore Celia Bidwell and freshman Elisabeth Rockefeller followed suit in the 1-meter.
On the men’s side, Calderaro claimed first-place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of 409.50 and 433.88, respectively.
For its next challenge, the red-and-white is set to open competition at the ACC Championships on Tuesday, Feb. 20. The five days of competition will take place at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
