There isn’t a better resume builder than a win against a top-25 team on the road. The opportunity presented itself to the Wolfpack in a road game against the No. 24 Florida State Seminoles, but the Pack suffered its third consecutive loss.
NC State volleyball (12-10, 7-7 ACC) finished off the weekend 0-2 after a 3-1 loss to No. 24 Florida State (18-6, 10-4 ACC) in Tallahassee on Sunday.
The Wolfpack entered the game looking to make a statement win and prove why it deserves to make the NCAA Tournament. Instead, it showed that maybe this year hasn’t lived up to expectations.
The first set saw an even start between the Wolfpack and the Seminoles, with it taking a 5-5 tie. FSU went on a 4-0 run to make it 9-5. NC State responded with a gradual comeback to tie it at 16-16 and eventually took a 22-21 lead. Unfortunately for the Wolfpack, the Seminoles closed out the first set to win it 26-24.
The second set saw a strong start for the Noles as they got off to an 8-3 lead early. The Pack tried to come back, but the closest it was able to make it was within four points. The Seminoles ultimately pulled away and won the set 25-16, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set opened with another strong start for Florida State as it took an early 6-3 lead. The Wolfpack struck back and took a 14-13 lead halfway through the set. Florida State failed to take back the lead and the Pack ended the set on a 4-0 run to win 25-19, making the match score 2-1 FSU.
The fourth set saw the most even play in the entire match with neither team gaining more than a two-point lead. At match point, an attack error on NC State junior outside hitter Courtney Bryant gave Florida State a 25-23 win in the fourth set, clinching them the match win.
The biggest player of the game for the Pack was senior opposite hitter Amanda Rice. Despite the loss, Rice had one of her best games of the season, totaling 20 kills on 34 total attacks.
With another loss on the season, there is not much more room for error. NC State is now 12-10 overall and 7-6 in conference play. What seemed to be a team with great momentum has now turned into a team desperate for a statement win to make the NCAA Tournament.
It has three more games against top 25 ACC teams, one against Pittsburgh and two against SMU — must-win games for a team as desperate as NC State.
The Wolfpack will play its next game in Raleigh on Wednesday, Nov. 13 against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The game is slated to start at 7:00 p.m.
