Kicking off a four-game ACC road trip, NC State volleyball took down Notre Dame 25-18, 25-21 and 25-16 for a 3-0 sweep.
With the Pack’s (10-5, 5-2 ACC) win over the Fighting Irish (9-7, 2-5 ACC), it has now won three conference games in a row, establishing a well-above 0.500 record overall and in conference play.
Three Wolfpack players reached the double-digit point mark — junior outside hitters Ava Brizard and Courtney Bryant who were joined by senior opposite hitter Amanda Rice. The trio combined for 29 kills and five service aces.
Serving hard from the baseline continued to be a strength for the Pack as four players had two or more aces. Graduate setter Naomi Cabello and graduate defensive specialist Skye Stokes had two and three aces, respectively bringing the team total to 10 for the three sets.
Junior middle blocker Sophie Groom set a new season-high in total blocks with six. Five of those six total blocks came in the second set.
The Pack jumped out to an early lead in the first set winning six of the first eight points and extending that lead to 10-5. The Fighting Irish battled back to tie the first set at 11-11, but the Wolfpack reestablished its lead and took the first set 25-18.
Bryant paced the Pack in kills with four in the first set, with three crucial ones coming in the middle of the set helping the Wolfpack regain a five-point lead after Notre Dame had battled back to tie it.
The red-and-white carried its momentum from the first over into the second, starting out with a 5-0 lead. Similarly to the first set, Notre Dame fought back and tied the game this time at 6-6. From here on the teams traded points evenly with neither falling behind by more than two.
At 14-14, on an assist from Stokes, Rice killed the ball giving the Pack the serving advantage. All three of Stokes’ aces came in a row extending the lead from 15-14 to 18-14 late in the second. Winning four of the next six points, the Wolfpack extended the lead to 22-16.
Despite the Fighting Irish closing the cap to 24-21 late in the middle frame on an assist from Cabello, Rice gave the Pack a 2-0 lead on its fourth set point of the set. Cabello’s 16 assists against Notre Dame marked the 12th consecutive time she has had 15 or more assists in a game.
The third set started highly contested but after the game was tied at 7-7, the Pack built a sizeable lead. At one point late in the third, NC State led 21-13, the largest lead by either team throughout the contest. With the game ending on a service error from Notre Dame, the Pack closed out the final set 25-16 to take the 3-0 sweep.
The Wolfpack has its hardest matchup up to this point in the season in the next game when it takes on the No. 4 Louisville Cardinals. The Pack has a lowly 2-8 record against the Cardinals but last year the Wolfpack knocked off No. 5 Louisville 3-1 in Reynolds Coliseum.
The match is set to take place on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m.
