In its second tournament of the season, NC State women’s golf finished fourth in the Cavalier Regional Preview in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Over two days of competition, NC State placed fourth in the 12-team field with a score of 26-over par — 48 strokes behind first-place UNC-Chapel Hill. In her second collegiate tournament, freshman Marie Eline Madsen once again recorded the lowest score of all NC State golfers with a score of 1-under par, marking her second consecutive tournament in which she has finished under par.
Madsen opened the tournament shooting even in round one. She caught fire in the second round, recording a score of 4-under par behind five birdies that placed her in a tie for third place. Madsen fizzled out on the last 18 with a 3-over performance, but her performance was still good enough to secure a tie for sixth place.
Madsen was the only Wolfpack golfer and just one of nine to finish under par. She recorded the third-lowest average on par 4’s with an average of 3.96 strokes and recorded 10 birdies across the two days, the fourth-best of the tournament.
Junior Vania Simont recorded the second-lowest score for NC State, finishing with a score of 8-over par to claim 22nd place. Simont recorded a 2-over score through the first two rounds, but much like Madsen, fell apart in round three, closing out the tournament with a 6-over score in round three.
Simont recorded eight birdies for the tournament, but they weren’t enough to offset her 10 bogeys and three double bogeys.
Sophomore Ellise Rymer recorded an 11-over score that placed her in a tie for 30th place. Rymer went 6-over through her first two rounds, and much like her teammates before her, couldn’t finish strong in the third round with a 5-over par score.
Rymer’s nine birdies were the second-highest for the Wolfpack but shot 13 bogeys or worse.
Rounding out the Wolfpack’s lineup were seniors Caitlin Whitehead and Lauren Olivares Leon, who placed in a tie for 34th and 50th, respectively.
Olivares had a sharp dropoff from her last tournament where she finished in 11th place with a score of 1-under par. Olivares failed to record a round under par, whereas she recorded two rounds under par two weeks ago.
Up next, the Wolfpack travels down the road to nearby Chapel Hill to compete in the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational at the Finley Golf Club from Oct. 11-13.
