NC State Athletics was very busy this week, from men’s soccer closing its season to swimming and diving opening its season. Overall, it was a winning week for the Pack — it only lost two events.
Men’s soccer falls in first round of ACC tournament to close season
NC State men’s soccer had two matches against Syracuse in two weeks, one to end its regular season and one match in the ACC tournament. The Wolfpack drew against Syracuse prior to the tournament matchup but didn’t bring the necessary offense it needed in the tournament. The Pack only put up three shots on the goal against the Orange and let Syracuse score five goals to kick it out of the tournament in the first round for the fourth consecutive time.
Following the loss, NC State Athletics announced that former head coach George Kiefer will not return for the 2024 season.

Swimming & diving opens season at home
The Pack showed out in its first home meet of the year. Both the men’s and women’s squads are ranked fourth, and the men’s team took down both Duke and Georgia while the women’s squad fell to second behind the Bulldogs. The NC State men raked in nine first place finishes and four second place finishes. The Wolfpack women had five first place finishes and four second place finishes. NC State also had two divers place first in their events.

Volleyball splits games over weekend
NC State took Boston College to five sets, but ultimately fell due to depleting offense and excessive errors throughout the contest. The Pack took the first two sets but had to rebound after dropping the third. The fourth set was a battle Boston College came out on the winning side of, and to pound it all home, the Eagles easily overtook NC State in the fifth.
Whatever was missing against Boston College came back to NC State against Syracuse. The Pack swept the Orange easily, crediting good communication and everyone showing up ready to play for the win. Three NC State players hit double-digit kills and the team as a whole hit at least 10 kills per set.

Football defeats Miami, 20-6
NC State football’s defense stepped up against Miami, holding the team that has averaged 35.4 points per game this season to two field goals. Once the Pack’s defense made some critical moves against Miami to put the offense back on the field, sophomore quarterback MJ Morris led it on a 97-yard drive for a touchdown that placed NC State two scores above Miami.

Wrestling takes down Appalachian State
The No. 3 NC State wrestling squad took down App State 40-3. . Redshirt senior Jarrett Trombley was the only wrestler to drop his match against the Mountaineers. Between solid returners like senior Jakob Camacho and redshirt senior Trent Hidlay and the Pack’s upcoming freshman talent, each match showed off the aggressiveness of Wolfpack wrestling.

Men’s basketball takes on Mount Olive in exhibition
NC State men’s basketball held an exhibition game against Mount Olive where it narrowly won 89-79. The Pack’s drastically changed roster showed the team is still finding its legs as a unit.
However, head coach Kevin Keatts is happy with the balance his team was able to find in the change-filled offseason as he was able to shift people around all night and still yield the scoring results he wanted.

Women’s basketball smashes Catawba in exhibition
The Pack showed out against Catawba and made the win look easy. Its fast-paced offense paid off with fast break points and an aggressiveness that Wolfpack fans are familiar with. Two players recorded 23 points in the matchup and two others scored over 10 points. The squad did struggle in one area — 3-pointers. NC State only shot 3-22 from behind the arc, so this will be something to watch throughout the season.
