The Carolina Hurricanes took down the New York Islanders 4-3 in a dramatic late-game offensive showing. After falling behind 3-0 in the second period, the Canes were able to score 4 unanswered goals to get the win.
Carolina (7-5-0) came into the game off of a rough loss to the New York Rangers on Friday night, but the team was able to rally quickly and get an important divisional win. The Islanders (5-2-3) have been swapping wins and losses so far this season, and this game was the team’s third overtime loss since the season began.
When the puck dropped and the first period started, it was clear this game would be one where the offenses would shine. Carolina had three shots on goal within the first four minutes of the period and eventually finished the 20 minutes with 14. The first period also saw the most penalties between the two teams — two were handed out to each bench.
It was less than two minutes into the first period when the goal horn sounded for the Islanders. With a backhand shot on Canes netminder Antti Raanta, Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson made it 1-0 in favor of the home team.
The second period saw the most offensive pressure on both sides of the ice with the Islanders scoring two goals and Carolina scoring one. By the time 10 minutes of play had passed in the period, two more Islanders players snuck goals past Rannta to make the deficit 3-0. This lead wouldn’t last too long though, with defenseman Jalen Chatfield getting Carolina started on the board.
In his first goal of the season, Chatfield scored less than a minute after the Islanders, shooting the puck through traffic in front of the net. Assisted by left wing Jordan Martinook and center Jordan Staal, Carolina used this goal to score three more unanswered goals and win the game.
With the third and final period underway, the Canes absolutely dominated on the ice and totaled 19 shots on goal to the Islander’s five. The Carolina defense was buzzing around the ice, forcing giveaways and blocking shots.
Defenseman Dmitry Orlov scored next for the Canes, bringing the score to 2-3. With seven minutes left in the period, Orlov sniped a shot past Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin to score his first goal of the season.
Orlov’s goal was joined three minutes later by another Carolina goal, this time scored by center Jesperi Kotkaniemi. With the clock ticking down on a Canes power play, the team had to move fast to tie the game at three apiece. Kotkaniemi stepped up for Carolina, putting a wrist shot right past Sorokin and pushing the game to overtime.
With Carolina leading shots on goal with 46 compared to the Islander’s 24, it seemed like the Canes would pull away with the win heading into overtime. Only a minute and 14 seconds had to pass for that statement to become true — center Sebastian Aho delivered the final blow to the Islanders with a wrist shot, bringing the final score to 4-3.
After an exciting weekend in New York, the Canes will travel back to Raleigh to take on the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.
