NC State wrestling took down Appalachian State 40-3 in its second outing of the season Friday, Nov. 3.
No. 3 NC State (2-0) has historically been able to fend off the Mountaineers (0-1) and has gone 10-0 in the last 10 matches between the squads. This is one of the Pack’s more dominant wins — only one App State wrestler won his match.
No. 8 sophomore Jackson Arrington started the night off with a definitive win 19-3 in the 149-lb. weight class and took the opening match on a tech fall. No. 5 junior Ed Scott was up next in the 157-lb. weight class and allowed a three-point takedown in the third period, but he eventually won his match 13-6.
The next two matches were more challenging for NC State. In the 165-lb. weight class was sophomore AJ Kovacs, who allowed an early takedown in the first period that led to the closest matchup at that point in the night. He didn’t let App State’s Will Miller’s early lead discourage him from a last-second comeback to take the match 5-4. No. 22 senior Alex Faison in the 174-lb. weight class also had a close match and went into overtime after tying 3-3. With just over a minute left in overtime, Faison scored a takedown to win the match 6-3.
No. 32 freshman Dylan Fishback in the 184-lb. weight class took down his opponent easily and got the Pack to 20-0 before intermission. Fishback quickly decided the match, pinning his opponent for an easy win.
No. 5 redshirt senior Trent Hidlay had an easy matchup against a true freshman in the 197-lb. weight class. While the App State wrestler did manage to get some points in, Hidlay smashed him 19-4.
No. 8 heavyweight redshirt junior Owen Trephan pinned his opponent in the first period and finished up quickly in just over two minutes, taking his win.
No. 8 senior Jakob Camacho took a 19-3 win over a technical fall and made it look easy in the 125-lb. weight class. The 133-lb. weight class was stacked with a three-time NCAA qualifier from NC State and a one-time NCAA qualifier from App State. In this match, redshirt senior Jarrett Trombley was thrown off early on by a takedown and wasn’t able to come back at all, dropping the Pack’s only match.
No. 9 junior Ryan Jack was the Pack’s last wrestler for the night in the 141-lb. weight class. With an easy 20-6 victory, Jack solidified NC State’s win against the Mountaineers.
The Pack will be back in action again at WrangleMania against Bloomsburg at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11.
