From playing for local fraternities to going on tour, Harvey Street Co. is an indie-rock band that’s currently doing it all. Its name comes from a street that is the middle ground between the two houses the five members use for practice.
The band consists of Ran Albright, NC State alum and lead vocalist and guitarist, Erich Kronschnabel, a fourth-year studying East Asian languages and keyboardist and trombonist, Jerome Bermudez, a fourth-year studying business administration and bassist and vocalist, Baylor Wordsworth, NC State alum and guitarist and Frank Watson, NC State alum and drummer.
The members met at NC State, and once they realized each other’s love for music, there was an instant connection.
“It was kind of weird, like we didn’t even expect to become a band,” Bermudez said. “We had jammed together two or three times, and then one day Baylor was like, ‘We have a gig.’”
Wordsworth and Watson started playing together from a young age and have had chemistry since. The two found the other three members and formed the band from just a few jam sessions.
“They are like the band dads,” Kronschnabel said. “They are a bit older and also just a bit more settled. They keep us grounded for sure.”
In one of the jam sessions, which took place in Watson’s basement, Wordsworth asked Albright to become lead singer.
The band started playing small gigs at local places like Lola’s Beach Bar, but they found their niche in the fraternity and sorority scene.
“Baylor, Frank and I were all in fraternities at one point, so we had that connection to people to be able to play at events,” Albright said. “It definitely helped us out by having those connections, but eventually the word just spread, and we started doing venues.”
With three out of the five band members in Greek life, the band started doing events for fraternities for free. After a while, they began to receive inquiries from local venues to play at their events.
“People talk a lot about the college scene, but it was really good to us, and we are working on elevating to the next level,” Kronschnabel said.
The band has transformed from performing cover songs to having multiple EPs released. One of the band’s popular songs is “Betty,” for which the band drew inspiration from Frank’s dog. While listeners might think the song is about a girl, it is not; it’s about the golden retriever on the cover.
“It was just kind of random,” Kronschnabel said. “We had written a couple of other songs that day, and we were on a roll and just fired up so we were like, ‘Let’s write a song about Frank’s dog,’ and Ran was like ‘How sick would it be if it sounded like it’s about a girl but it’s really about a dog?’ And we wrote it then and there in that moment.”
Like “Betty,” most of their songs come naturally.
“We just try and write the best music we can,” Albright said. “We don’t really push any kind of sound. We just try and make music that we like and use all of our strengths to do that.”
Their future plans include going on tour in January and continuing to release new music.
Throughout the years, the members have had to balance school, work and being in a band, which hasn’t been easy.
“It’s so hard; … there is no other way to put it,” Kronshnabel said. “We’ve learned so much about time management and we just have to be intentional about our time.”
They all love performing, and it is that love which motivates them to continue with this project.
“We are just five dudes,” Kronschnabel said. “We don’t pull up in any crazy outfits on stage because we are just five people who play instruments and ended up being in a band.”
