NC State men’s golf concluded its fall schedule at the Williams Cup in Wilmington, North Carolina, hosted by the Eagle Point Golf Club.
The Pack finished in seventh place in a field of 10 teams with an overall score of 890, which put it 37 strokes behind first-place finisher UNC-Chapel Hill. Graduate student Spencer Oxendine led the Wolfpack, finishing in a tie for sixth with a score of 1-under par. Oxendine was the only NC State athlete to finish under par.
Oxendine’s best performance occurred in the last round when he shot 1-under par, including three birdies on the back nine. The graduate excelled on par 3s throughout the tournament. He finished 2-under par on par 3s, which was tied for the best score of anyone in the field.
The second-best finish for the Pack came from redshirt junior Nick Mathews, who tied for 16th with a score of 4-over par. Mathews overcame a rough start that put him over par in the first two rounds, but he bounced back in the final round with a score of 2-under par. The redshirt junior had 10 birdies for the tournament, the most of any NC State player.
The only other golfer to finish in the top 50 for the red-and-white was junior Michael Vick, who tied for 33rd with a score of 11-over par. While Vick struggled on par 3s and 4s, he capitalized on par 5s, finishing with a score of even par on those for the tournament.
Sophomore Joey Lenane and junior Cade McLaughlin rounded out the lineup for the Pack, finishing in a tie for 52nd with scores of 18-over par. Despite a rough outing for Lenane, he was the only NC State golfer to record an eagle.
While there were some solid individual performances from NC Statethe Pack, it will need to do better on par 5s as a team in the future. The red-and-white NC State finished 8-over par on par 5s for the tournament, which was the worst of any team in the field.
With this being the last tournament of the fall schedule, NC State will have time to improve as a team before its next tournament. The Wolfpack will start its spring schedule at the Watersound Invitational, which is scheduled to take place from Feb. 19-21 in Panama City Beach, Florida.
