NC State cross country split up its squads last weekend to take on the Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin and the Pirate Invitational in Greenville, North Carolina.
At Nuttycombe, senior Katelyn Tuohy paced the Pack with a time of 19:29.5 and placed second overall in the women’s 6k. Senior Kelsey Chmiel wasn’t far behind Touhy, coming in just over 23 seconds behind to take third. Freshman Leah Stephens and sophomores Grace Hartman and Hannah Gapes rounded out the red-and-white’s lineup, coming in 14th, 26th and 51st, respectively.
As a team, the Wolfpack women finished in second place with 95 points.
In the men’s 8k race, graduate student Toby Gualter finished first for the red-and-white with a time of 24:07.6. The NC State men totalled 677 points and finished 31st as a team, with no athletes placing in the top 50.
The majority of the Pack’s lineup ran unattached in the Pirate Invitational with many athletes recording impressive individual finishes. Freshmen Jolena Quarzo, Kate Putman, Angelina Napoleon and sophomore Caroline Murrell all finished in the top 10 of the women’s 6k, with Murrell being the only runner attached to NC State. Quarzo was the only NC State athlete to land on the podium, taking second place with her time of 20:58.9.
In the men’s 8k, graduate student David Vorbach, sophomore Ryan Motondo and junior Miles Ally finished in the top 10 overall, taking first, fifth and ninth, respectively. Vorbach’s time of 23:27.5 was just over 15 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
Neither the men’s or women’s team had enough runners attached to have NC State score as a team.
Next up, the Wolfpack will head to Tallahassee, Florida to compete in the ACC Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 27.
