Wolfpack Students is a Facebook group for NC State students to join and to post a variety of things. Typically these posts are questions about certain courses, professors, books, etc. It is also a place that many students use to post clever memes and stir up school spirit against those other NC schools. The purpose of the group is really to offer assistance when needed and to unite the student body as we all identify as a “Wolfpack Student.”
However, the group is not a bunch of likeminded students engaging in philosophical debate about the merits of being part of the Wolfpack. Undoubtedly, there are instances when the conversations get a little out of hand. For instance, it seems that any time there is a bit of inclement weather, the group gets riled up and ready to attack anyone and everyone who doesn’t feel classes should be cancelled. It might seem silly that there is so much weather-related arguing, and it is, but take a look for yourself if you’re not convinced.
The main points being discussed—and I use that word loosely—is whether classes will be cancelled, complaints about classes not being cancelled and complaints about people complaining that classes should be cancelled. And most of the arguers have no problem offering rude, sarcastic remarks to anyone with a different opinion. These remarks often follow an “If you don’t like it, you can leave” format.
Maybe boredom leads to the useless arguing, but for some reason people get a little crazy when snow starts to fall. Upon reading the different threads, one would think it was both NCSU and UNC posting in the group, as everyone is quick to jump down anyone’s throat for any small reason. The popular reason lately is if anyone has an opinion about cancelling classes.
Many people are excited when classes get cancelled. This is pretty understandable and almost universally shared among students in the US. Everyone could use a break from class every now and again. Expressing that class cancelling would be great is of little harm. Or at least you would think. But there are a few on Wolfpack Students who believe that anyone who dares desire to have a cancelled class must not actually want an education and be a slacking, trust-fund having, lazy individual. I think they probably just want to sleep in.
Then there are those who are commuting and genuinely anxious about road conditions and accidents. When classes are not cancelled at the drop of a hat these people usually claim that NC State does not care for its students and is okay with everyone getting in wrecks. Although this is a fair concern, and we can agree that the delay in cancellations on Tuesday was slightly questionable, the administration is probably not out to get us.
And we cannot forget about those out of state students from locations that are probably used to a bit more snow. They like to sit on their mighty thrones and cast judgment on all who think there is ever a reason for class to be cancelled. “Snow?? HA! This is nothing. This is what our summer is like. Get over it and go to class.” This is of course really helpful and well received.
The point is, there’s no need to assume that wanting classes to be cancelled constitutes a lazy person, our university doesn’t care about us when classes aren’t cancelled or a small amount of snow shouldn’t be taken seriously.
Hopefully it is just the weather making everyone crazy. But remember that as NC State students we really have no reason to argue needlessly about something as trivial as the weather. Surely, there are other things that can be discussed maturely that we might actually be able to influence. Maybe we could switch to “Wolfpack Pets in the Snow” for a while.
