It’s the most wonderful time of the year.
It is time to shove those pea coats in a bin under your bed and revive those tank tops you have missed so dearly. But before you do that, dive into your mom’s closet and hope she kept her clothes from the late ‘90s.
If she didn’t, do yourself a favor and watch some Spice Girls, Christina Aguilera or Britney Spears throwback music videos for fashion inspiration and for your own good.
If she did, rummage through the unwearable in hopes for gold (note: A second-hand store is a great substitute for mom’s closet).
“What should I look for?” you may ask. I would look for any type of overalls, crop-tops, floor-length flowy dresses and chunky shoes. The uglier the shoes, the better. On first glance, they may look repulsive, but paired with the right outfit they may be the missing link.
If you are like me, the mentioning of the words “jelly shoes” makes me feel warm inside because I’m pretty sure I had a pair in a kid’s size 11. I could not be more excited that they are back and being sold at popular retail stores.
Give the old late ‘90s color schemes, usually consisting of dark maroons, browns and blacks, some life by mixing in some color. Forever 21 is filled with colorful tennis skirts that put a modern twist on the throwback fashion. Pastels are also lovely for spring and can look interesting paired with a dark ‘90s piece.
Monochromatic outfits are also showing themselves in “Harper’s Bazaar” street style watcher. Specifically, cherry red from head to toe.
The pairing of the classically masculine and feminine colors can make you feel like you can take over the world (cue “Who run the World? Girls” by Beyoncé).
Speaking of powerful women, exuding confidence through your outfit choices is always in style but especially now. So if you feel extra sassy, try wearing a choker, wearing your hair in two high buns on your head or letting your midriff show a little. All three of those trends are a go for this spring.
The ‘90s were a time of minimal makeup, and the makeup trends are following suit.
If somebody’s face could be trendy, then that face would be Kylie Jenner’s. Her pout is being recreated on Instagram feeds worldwide by girls who think lining their lips will substitute for Botox. Nonetheless, lip liner and nude lips are in, and so is limiting the colors on your face. People are loving makeup that makes it look like you aren’t wearing any but really playing up the eyelashes and eyebrows.
But if bold is in your makeup vocabulary, I suggest going with a purple lip. Winter was all about dark lips, and I think that can translate into spring by turning up the vibrancy and brightness of the color.
This spring is all about being bold and confident. Wear that crazy outfit you have been staring at and waiting for a special day to wear. Take it from the Spice Girls themselves and “Spice up your life.”
