Amidst a roller coaster season, the Carolina Hurricanes lost 3-2 to the Philadelphia Flyers in their fourth overtime defeat in the last six games.
The Hurricanes (7-10-4) fell into a 2-0 hole in the second period but fought back with two third period goals from two of the team’s youngest players to send the game into overtime before giving up a game-winning power play goal to the Philadelphia Flyers (7-9-5).
Before the game started, the Flyers held a ceremony to honor former Flyers and Hurricanes player and current Hurricanes assistant coach Rod Brind’Amour and induct him into the Flyers Hall of Fame.
In his nine seasons in Philadelphia, Brind’Amour played in 633 games and recorded 253 goals. He spent his last 10 years in Carolina where he played 694 games in red and black, recording 174 goals and 299 assists.
Monday night greeted both teams with a scoreless, back and forth first period. Halfway through the first, Hurricanes center Brad Malone and Flyers left-winger Pierre-Edouard Bellemare dropped their gloves and both took fighting major penalties.
Hurricanes goaltender Eddie Lack came out strong, saving all 17 shots he faced in the first 28 minutes of play, including a huge penalty shot save on Flyers center Brayden Schenn late in the first period.
The Flyers capitalized on the power play in the second period when Brayden Schenn slid the puck past Lack for the 1-0 advantage.
A short five minutes later, Philadelphia doubled their advantage on a shorthanded goal from captain center Claude Giroux.
Down by two goals entering the third period, the Canes knew what needed to be done and they came back from a 2-0 deficit.
22-year old center Victor Rask sliced the Flyers lead in half eight minutes into the period, and 21-year old defender Brett Pesce followed his lead a short eight minutes later, tying the game at two goals a piece.
The overtime period, one that neither team is unfamiliar with this season, was ended early when Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere fired a shot past Lack on the power play, only 24 seconds into the extra frame.
