The NC State sailing team will be looking to get off to a strong start with two regattas over the next two weekends. The first will be the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association Open this weekend at the College of Charleston.
The team will be sailing against fellow SAISA schools from areas across the Southeast, including Duke and UNC Wilmington. The regatta will be held Saturday and Sunday in Charleston harbor.
After the SAISA Open, the team will be hosting the SAISA Sailpack Women’s Regatta at Lake Wheeler next weekend, Sept. 19 and 20. More than 40 college sailors and coaches will be participating in this event, including from Duke, South Carolina, South Florida, College of Charleston and other SAISA schools.
The team is definitely looking forward to this regatta.
“We are really excited to host this event and to be able to contribute to the growth of Women’s college sailing in our conference and in Raleigh,” said sophomore Kara Wheeler, co-captain of the NC State women’s team. “In our third year with the Women’s program, we’ve seen exciting growth and participation. Hosting this regatta is another great way to showcase this and reward our sailors for hard work.”
The team will have food available for spectators, and students will be able to take campus transportation to the Saturday portion of the regatta.
Head coach Dana Magliola credited the team’s sponsors and partners as a big reason for the ability to host these events.
“We could not put on a great event like this alone,” Magliola said. “We rely on the support of our presenting sponsor, TrustAtlantic Bank. Together with help from the Preiss Company, Kind Snacks and our partnership with the City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, we are able to ensure NC State’s Women’s sailing program flourishes and college sailing has a stage in Raleigh.”
The Opening Ceremony will be at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and that portion will run until 4 p.m., with Sunday’s events beginning at 9:30 a.m. as well.
