The Wolfpack women’s basketball team came up just short of a comeback against the Seminoles of Florida State with a score of 67-64 at Reynolds Coliseum.
After honoring junior guard Marissa Kastanek’s achievement of reaching the 1000-point milestone for the Pack, the game was under way. After Florida State won the tip-off, the Pack would attack defensively, causing the Seminoles to turn the ball over both early and often.
Senior forward Bonae Holston would start the charge offensively for the Pack with a couple of buckets that would turn into a 6-0 opening run. Kastanek would eventually find a way to get the crowd pumped up with a lay-in off an assist by sophomore guard Myisha Goodwin-Coleman.
Unselfish ball movement by N.C . State would keep the lead comfortable with 13:59 remaining in the half. Turnovers would continue to haunt the Seminoles as they would accumulate 17 in the first half alone, 8 of which came within the opening 10 minutes. Resulting from turnovers were frustration fouls by the Seminoles , putting the Pack on the line often.
State would eventually slip defensively as the lead would dwindle away with 9:49 remaining in the half. Better shooting by Florida State and missed opportunities by the Pack would give the Seminoles a seven point lead. Turnovers negatively affected the Pack as Florida State’s lead grew to 9 points with the half winding down. Both teams would head into the locker room with a score of 39-30 in the Seminole’s favor. The Seminoles held leading scorer for the Pack, Kastanek , to only 4 points.
To open the second half, a three by both Goodwin-Coleman and Kastanek would give the Pack a 6-0 run. Turnovers would continue to be the enemy of the Seminoles as State would capitalize on transition buckets. Great offensive rebounding by sophomore forward Kody Burke and a bucket by Holston would bring the Pack within six with 15:11 remaining in the match-up.
The Pack would once again let up defensively as they would go back down by 11 to Florida State. Goodwin-Coleman would then go 4-for-4 at the free-throw line and hit a three to bring the Pack back within four leading a 7-0 run alone. The Seminoles would return the favor with a 4-0 run of their own. The Pack would see themselves down by 6 with the under eight minute timeout.
Two three-point buckets by senior guard Emili Tasler would bring the Pack within three as the team found rhythm. Both teams would battle back and forth as Florida State would have the lead by 4 points with 3:26 remaining. Both teams would exchange turnovers as neither team could score in transition. Goodwin-Coleman would then go perfect from the line as well as hit a runner to put the Pack within 2 points with 0:31 remaining. A FSU turnover would give the ball back to State with one more chance to tie or take the lead. Holston would hit an easy basket to tie the game with 9 seconds left. The Seminoles would charge the floor and eventually hit a three to win the game with a final score of 67-64.
Leaders for the Pack include Goodwin-Coleman with 17 points, which tied a career high, Holston with 14, and Kastanek with 10. The Wolfpack will travel to Blacksburg, Va . on Sunday to face off against the Virginia Tech Hokies .
