After taking down North Carolina A & T on Friday, South Carolina earned another game in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament — against N.C. State at 7 p.m. today in Reynolds Coliseum on Kay Yow Court.
The Gamecocks eclipsed the 100-point mark in their opening-round 102-74 win. During the game, South Carolina freshman Jordan Jones set a WNIT record and tied a school record with nine 3-pointers.
The win moved USC to 16-15 on the season, while State comes into the game at 18-12.
It’s been more than two weeks since State last played — on March 6 in a 65-60 loss against Clemson.
Last game against South CarolinaWhen N.C. State played South Carolina on Nov. 29, 2006, at Reynolds Coliseum, women’s basketball coach Kay Yow wasn’t marching the sidelines.
Associate head coach Stephanie Glance was serving as the interim coach as Yow had taken an indefinite leave of absence from the team.
During that game, the Wolfpack defeated the Gamecocks 53-41 after holding USC to less than 25 percent shooting from the field.
In the press conference following the game, South Carolina coach Susan Walvius said State outhustled and outplayed her team.
“They won the hustle plays battle today,” she said. “It came down to that. Sometimes games are going to come down to that. That is where I think they got the game.”
Last time State didn’t advance to NCAAsIt’s been a while since N.C. State hasn’t been invited to the NCAA Tournament — in fact, it’s been nearly five years.
State was invited during the 2003-2004 campaign, despite a 17-14 overall record entering the tournament and an 8-8 record in the ACC.
But in the 2002-2003 season State finished the year 11-17 with a 6-10 record in the conference. After a first-round ACC Tournament loss to Virginia, State’s season ended with an all-time high in 17 losses for the program, matching the team’s loss total from 1988.
