The word “paddle” may conjure up an assortment of negative images — either in the style of 19th century schoolhouse punishments or in association with fraternity hazing. And as conditioned through popular films such as Animal House, the wooden paddle is commonly viewed as a symbol of fraternity tradition and punishment.
However, modern uses of the fraternity paddle reveal a symbolic bond and sense of pride.
According to John Morgan, a sophomore in economics and a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, the paddle marks the end of a pledging period, during which “pledges” prove their dedication to a fraternity and become brothers. Morgan describes the importance of the paddle as the “culmination of ending your pledging” and “one piece of memorabilia you’ll take from your pledge experience.”
And in Morgan’s experience, the significance of the paddle is both symbolic and decorative. Each brother decorates his paddle with the colors and crest of his fraternity, but adds details and symbols specific to his pledge class and personal preferences.
“It’s important because it’s unique, but at the same time it’s symbolic for the whole frat,” Morgan said. “It’s like a historical landmark for your life when you look back.”
Depending on the type of fraternity, the paddle represents different accomplishments. Megan Culbreth, a junior in biochemistry, is pledging the honors fraternity, Phi Sigma Pi. Culbreth designed and crafted a paddle for her big brother, who helped her get acclimated to the fraternity and initiation process.
“I don’t feel that it’s a huge deal, but it’s a sign of respect for your big brother and appreciation toward them,” Culbreth says.
Having completed weeks of initiation rites and events, Culbreth said she views the paddle as a way to “honor the bond that you both [big and little brother] share.”
Culbreth looks forward to being a big brother to an initiate, but knows she won’t take the position lightly.
“As a big brother, you have a lot of responsibility. … You’re a go-between for your little brother and the frat.”
But as Culbreth further reflects on the paddle-making process, the ultimate response is positive.
“I had fun making the paddle for my big [brother], so it’s exciting.”
Whether fulfilling the role of memento or symbolizing a bond, the fraternity paddle has little modern relevance in the context of fraternity hazing rituals. Though its significance varies between fraternities, a common theme prevails: the celebration of a common bond.
